KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) for April 2017 increased 4.2 per cent to 126.4 from 121.4 recorded in the same month last year.

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said the expansion was driven by the 6.7 per cent growth recorded by the manufacturing sector, which followed the 5.9 per cent growth recorded in March 2017.

Other major sub-sectors which expanded in April 2017 were the electrical and electronics products (9.7 per cent), food, beverages and tobacco (15.4 per cent) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3.0 per cent).

The department said the mining sector output contracted two per cent in April 2017 due to a 6.6 per cent drop in the crude oil index while the Natural Gas index rose 4.0 per cent.

"The electricity sector output declined 1.5 per cent in April 2017 after a 0.2 per cent decrease in March 2017," it added.
