The bombing of a night spot in Puchong last month marks a watershed in the Islamic State’s influence in Malaysia. It is the first ever IS attack on Malaysian soil. As of March this year, the Associated Press reported that over the past two years, the Malaysian police had arrested more than 160 people suspected of having ties to the Islamic State. How pervasive is the threat of IS in Malaysia? Dr. Maszlee Malik, an assistant professor at the International Islamic University, explains. Dr. Maszlee researches the intersection of politics and religion, and recently wrote about his findings working with IS-linked detainees at the Sungai Buloh prison.
