KUALA LUMPUR (July 4): The Royal Malaysian Navy has wasted RM384.49 million worth of unused spare parts, according to the 2024 Auditor General's Report.

One depot has 1.62 million unused parts worth RM381.69 million, while another depot has over 6,000 parts worth RM2.8 million, the report said. One reason cited for the non-utilisation of the spare parts is the exchange of equipment on ships with different brands and types of equipment.

Further, several patrol craft have been decommissioned and transferred to other agencies. "The use of spare parts was unsatisfactory, resulting in wastage," the report stated.

The report also flagged that the navy's ships were not being maintained according to schedule, with six out of 10 ships not having undergone refitting. Only one of the three fast-attack craft has undergone the obsolescence programme, the report added.

The issues were blamed on the navy's high operational demands and backlog at dockyards, where maintenance of other ships remained pending. The auditor general also warned that failure to adhere to maintenance schedules could lead to unidentified issues and pose safety risks.
