GEORGE TOWN: Elsoft Research Bhd will ship out 40 units of test equipment in the first half of 2018, compared to 30 in the same period last year.

Chief executive officer C.E. Tan said based on the market value of close to RM1mil per unit, the value of the 40 units is about RM40mil.

“Most of the orders come from the smart device segment, followed by the automotive and general lighting industries. They will go to customers in the Asia-Pacific.

“For the first half of 2017, about 60% of the orders were for the automotive segment. The shipment for the first half of 2017 was about RM30mil,” he said.

Tan added that the first quarter was usually a weaker period.

“However, the first quarters of 2016, 2017, and 2018 had proven to be unusual,” he said.

The orders for the second half of 2018 should come in around April or May, according to Tan.

He added that the time needed to assemble a test equipment is between 10 weeks and 16 weeks, depending on whether it was a repeat order or for a new equipment.

SEMI, the the global industry association representing the electronics manufacturing supply chain, forecast a 7.5% growth in 2018 for the semiconductor equipment industry.
