The earliest military application of a balloon is often credited to Zhuge Liang, a well-known war strategist in dynastic China. That was in the 3rd century, when he used kerosene-doused cloth to propel a sky lantern that alerted allies in neighboring cities of a looming attack.
In the almost two thousand years since, balloon technology advanced and was used increasingly for reconnaissance missions during wars in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the Cold War. But the advent of satellites and drones rendered spy balloons mostly obsolete.
But US believes the Chinese balloons are for spying. The US has shot down 3 suspicious flying objects in 3 days. Here's what we know about the UAP floating over North America.
- US fighter aircraft shot down an object threatening airspace over Alaska on Friday.
- F-22 pilots who saw the object said it "interfered with their sensors" and had no propulsion system.
- On Saturday and Sunday, additional objects were shot down over Canada and near the US border.
A week after shooting down a suspected Chinese spy balloon that floated over the country, F-22 jets shot down an unidentified object threatening flights over Alaska on Friday. Reports offer conflicting details about the object's capabilities and origin, and US intelligence officials have released limited information about its design or intended purpose.

The downing of a third high-altitude object -- this one over Canada, on Saturday -- only increases the urgency for Congress to get to the bottom of what appears to be a previously unknown surveillance program by the Chinese, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
In an exclusive interview, Schumer told ABC "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos that "the bottom line is, until a few months ago, we didn't know of these balloons."
The suspected Chinese reconnaissance program also existed during the Trump administration but was only recently discovered by the U.S. intelligence and military communities, according to Schumer.
"It's wild we didn't know, isn't it?" Stephanopoulos said.
"It is wild that we didn't know, absolutely," Schumer said, adding, "Now they are learning a lot more."
The Chinese government confirmed that the massive balloon was theirs on Friday, while insisting it was merely a “civilian airship” used for weather research that accidentally wafted into U.S. airspace. The Pentagon has refuted this benign portrayal, saying the aircraft was just the latest in a string of Chinese balloons that have traversed over the U.S. and other countries collecting aerial intelligence.
China has extensive satellite network that can even take photos of motor car numbers. Why would China use balloons to spy on US? US is afraid of its own shadow.
