APEC has 21 members that aim to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration. Some of the specific objectives of APEC are:
- To reduce tariffs and other trade barriers across the Asia-Pacific region, creating efficient domestic economies and increasing exports.
- To enhance the positive effects of economic integration and mitigate the negative ones by implementing policies that support economic and technical cooperation, human security, and environmental protection.
- To develop and strengthen the multilateral trading system and support the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its negotiations.
- To foster a sense of community and partnership among the member economies, respecting their diversity and shared interests.
What did the 2 leaders discuss?
The exact details of what was spoken between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden at the 2023 APEC summit are not publicly available, but according to some news reports, the two leaders discussed a range of issues affecting the bilateral relationship and the global situation.
Some of the topics they reportedly talked about include:
- The need to restore normal and stable communications between the US and China, including in the military-to-military domain.

There are many potential advantages if the US and China collaborate on various issues of global importance, such as science, technology, climate change, and security. Some of the benefits are:
- Faster and more efficient development of new medicines and treatments for diseases, such as cancer, by sharing data and conducting joint clinical trials.
- Greater innovation and discovery in frontier fields, such as quantum physics, artificial intelligence, and space exploration, by pooling resources andexpertise.
- More effective and coordinated action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change, by setting ambitious targets and implementing policies.
- Reduced risk of conflict and escalation in regions of tension, such as the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea, and the Korean Peninsula, by enhancing dialogue and trust.
According to the Bureau of Industry and Security, the value of U.S. exports to China in 2021 was $151.1 billion, a 21.4% increase from 2020. The value of U.S. imports from China in 2021 was $506.4 billion, a 16.5% increase from 2020. The trade deficit with China in 2021 was $355.3 billion, a 14.5% increase from 2020. US imports from China is very much more than its exports.
US exports to China: According to the data from the U.S. Census Bureau, some of the products that the U.S. exported to China in 2020 were:
- Soybeans ($14.2 billion)
- Crude oil ($10.4 billion)
- Civilian aircraft, engines, equipment, and parts ($9.5 billion)
- Semiconductor and related devices ($6.1 billion)
- Cotton ($3.8 billion)
US imports from China: Some of the products that the U.S. imported from China in 2020 were:
- Cell phones and other household goods ($70.6 billion)
- Computers ($45.2 billion)
- Toys, games, and sporting goods ($26.7 billion)
- Furniture and bedding ($24.9 billion)
- Apparel, footwear, and household textiles ($24.1 billion)

Of course, collaboration does not mean compromising on core interests or values, and there will still be areas of competition and disagreement between the two countries. However, by finding common ground and working together on shared challenges, the US and China can both benefit from a more stable and prosperous world.
