Despite an impressive 93.5% pass rate in the 2023 SPM exams, fewer than 40% of these students choose to pursue higher education. This statistic not only highlights a significant gap but also underscores the need for urgent action from both students and policymakers. In today’s globalised world, obtaining a degree opens countless doors of opportunity.

On 17 July 2024, I had the honour of leading an SPM Motivation Workshop at Saint Xavier's Institution in Penang, where I addressed over 160 Form 5 students who will be sitting for the SPM examination in December 2024. Our aim was to inspire and equip these young individuals with essential study skills and motivation for them to excel in their 2024 SPM examination. During the workshop, we discussed academic preparation, effective exam strategies, and the importance of further education.

Education is more than just a ticket to passing exams; it is a gateway to transformation. Imagine students emerging not just with grades, but as dynamic individuals ready to drive change and foster progress. Modern education is about more than encouraging excellence in subjects—it is about equipping students with a toolkit of vital skills: sharp analytical thinking, advanced technical expertise and creative problem-solving abilities. These competencies are essential for navigating the competitive global stage and for shaping a brighter future for each student.

At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, our EmPOWER Programme is at the heart of this educational revolution. We are not merely teaching students; we are empowering them to excel in entrepreneurship, emotional intelligence, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. By fostering these crucial skills, we are preparing students not just for jobs, but to lead, innovate, and succeed in an ever-evolving world.

Moreover, the economic benefits of higher education are substantial. Graduates with tertiary education earn between 1.6 and 3 times more than their peers with only secondary schooling. This wage disparity highlights the role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and driving economic growth. Furthermore, higher education fosters private enterprise, enabling Malaysians to launch innovative ventures and contribute towards our national development.

Additionally, educated individuals play a crucial role in their communities by engaging in civic activities, advocating for social equity, and contributing to national progress. Their achievements extend beyond personal success, enhancing Malaysia’s global competitiveness and fostering a more inclusive society. At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, our students are deeply involved in community work and social engagement. For instance, our University’s EmPOWER Impact Projects 2024 raised RM120,000 through creative and pioneering crowdfunding activities from January to May 2024 to support 10 deserving charitable organisations in Klang Valley, having a serious impact on society.

Through these real-world experiences, students acquire skills that go beyond traditional classroom learning- nurturing empathy, responsibility and effective communication. This aligns with our University’s commitment to Purpose-Driven Education, aiming to foster emotional intelligence, effective time management, positivity, self-confidence, interpersonal and communication skills, and a strong sense of purpose.

In conclusion, investing in education is investing in our future. By nurturing and empowering today's youth, we not only unlock their individual potential but also open up vast opportunities for societal advancement. Each opportunity we create enriches our collective prosperity and helps shape the very foundation of tomorrow. As Nelson Mandela wisely noted, 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.' Let us commit ourselves to this transformative power with unwavering resolve, ensuring that every young person has the chance to achieve their dreams and, in doing so, contribute to a brighter and more hopeful future for all.
