PUTRAJAYA: The Dewan Rakyat Speaker can take action against Members of Parliament who fail to declare their assets after the Dec 5 deadline, says Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said that the House's Standing Order allows for the Speaker to act against the MPs, citing contempt.

"Apart from suspending MPs for failure to declare their assets, they can also be fined for not adhering to this," he told reporters on Wednesday (Nov 27).

The deadline for all MPs to declare their assets to the Speaker has been extended from Oct 1 to Dec 5.

In the July 1 motion, MPs, their wives, children above 21 and trustees must declare their assets and income by Oct 1.

The minister again brushed off claims that the move to make public their assets would cause safety concerns, pointing out that Ministers and government MPs had done so since October last year.

"Our assets have been on display since last year. The issue of safety does not arise," he said.
