KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhiddin Yassin today said he is in talks with his Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) counterpart Datuk Seri Abang Johari Abang Openg to form a coalition federal government after the 15th general election resulted in a hung Parliament.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, said he received a visit from the Sarawak leader as well as fellow PN ally and PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

“This morning, I received a visit from Sarawak Premier YAB Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, and PAS President YB Tan Sri Tuan Guru Haji Abdul Hadi Awang, to discuss the formation of the federal government.

“Negotiations are also being made with other parties that share the same views and independent MPs.

“Insya Allah, a federal government can be formed soonest,” he posted on Facebook this morning.

Muhyiddin chose to address the Sarawakian leader by the proper spelling of his real name.

The PN coalition won 73 parliamentary seats out of 222 as at 3am today, with six yet to be officially announced.

The number was combined with Islamist component party PAS – which contested under its own “moon” logo in the east coast peninsular states – contributing 22 seats.

Muhyiddin had earlier this morning told a news conference here that PN has received a letter from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong setting the conditions for it to form the next government.

He refused to divulge its contents.

GPS won 22 seats in its maiden parliamentary election.
