KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) president and group chief executive officer does not think that his contract will not be extended.

"I have no reason to believe it will not be extended," Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Taufik said when asked to comment on the status of his contract, which is believed to end this month.

"I have no shareholders communicating any sense of dissatisfaction. I have no reason at this juncture to believe that there should be no extension," he said.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik, however, stressed that that the decision to renew or not renew his contract lies with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Ultimately, the decision is at the discretion of the Prime Minister," he said at a briefing on Tuesday ahead of Petronas announcing its first quarter of financial year 2023 results today.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik took over the top management of Petronas on July 1, 2020, replacing Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.

He was Petronas chief financial officer and is a member of the board of directors since October 2018.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik, who is Petronas' third president in a decade,  assumed leadership of the national oil and gas company at the age of 47, making him one of the youngest individuals to hold the leadership position there.

Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Merican once assumed the top leadership of Petronas at the age of 43, while Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Mohd Hamzah was appointed to the same position at the age of 37.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik is a certified accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
