SEPANG: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the youth-based Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) should strive to become the government rather than securing a few seats in the state elections.

"What can you do with a few seats? You have to be the government, and the intention is to be one," he said at a special press conference in the Sama-Sama Hotel, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here, today.

Dr Mahathir was commenting on Muda's announcement that it would work independently in the state elections.

On Monday, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the party would contest independently in the state polls.

He said the decision was made following a consensus between its members and the committee.

Syed Saddiq, who is Muar member of parliament, added that the key decision to work independently was to put an end to fear-mongering politics.
