JOHOR BARU: Even the wife of the Tunku Mahkota Johor is not spared by scammers.

A fake Facebook account claiming to be Che' Puan Besar Khaleeda Bustamam has surfaced, promoting an air conditioner that is said to be Japan's top-selling portable air-conditioner.

Johor police chief Commissioner Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said a police report was lodged by a 40-year-old man yesterday on the fake account.

A post on the fake account on Tuesday had a doctored picture of Khaleeda, wearing her Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Pro-Chancellor robe while handing over the portable air conditioner to a recipient.

Khaleeda was appointed as UTM pro-chancellor in July last year.

It is believed that the actual gift in the picture taken during a university function was edited into the air conditioner.

There is also another picture of the Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, his wife and their children with the air-conditioner, which was obviously edited into the picture.

The case is being investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code for impersonation and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 for using network facilities to transmit communication that is deemed offensive and causing annoyance.

The offender faces a one-year jail term and a fine up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

Kamarul Zaman urged the public not to misuse social media platforms for their personal gains.
