THE possibility of former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak serving his sentence under house arrest is set to be discussed by the Cabinet, as confirmed by government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil. This matter was not addressed during the recent Cabinet meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim’s absence.

Fahmi clarified during a press conference that the topic had not been raised in the meeting and suggested it might be addressed upon the PM’s return to Malaysia. Anwar is currently on official visits to Qatar, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

“No, we did not discuss it. Maybe after the PM is back (in Malaysia).”

Najib’s bid for house arrest stems from his claim that a “supplementary decree” was issued by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah during the Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting on Jan 29, the day before the monarch’s reign ended.

The former premier’s legal team has sought confirmation from several government officials including Anwar, Zahid, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, regarding the existence of the alleged supplementary decree.

However, their requests remain unanswered.

Moreover, Zahid has supported Najib’s legal challenge stating in an affidavit that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz had shown him the “addendum order” on his phone during a meeting.

The High Court has scheduled April 17 to hear Najib’s application regarding this matter. - May 15, 2024
