KUALA LUMPUR (July 4): The Malaysian capital market needs to build its knowledge base through talent development to support the industry’s expansion.

Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said skills and capacity development are critical in building a strong base, and acquiring the ability to transform knowledge into growth.

"Continuous learning is essential for success in the capital market, which is constantly evolving. Professionals will need to reskill and upskill throughout the journey to keep pace with the demands of the industry.

"Therefore, proactively seeking out learning opportunities and staying updated with market trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies ensures professionals make informed decisions and adapt to the evolving environment," she said in her keynote address at the first graduation ceremony of the Certified Capital Market Professional (CCMP) certification programme - CCMP Dealing in Derivatives and CCMP Compliance.

She further said the CCMP programme from Securities Industry Development Corp (SIDC) is a comprehensive course that ensures capital market professionals attain high competency.

Meanwhile, SIDC chief executive officer Tengku Zarina Tengku Chik said the inaugural graduation ceremony had 248 professionals from 43 countries.

"We have recently launched SIDC’s sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) series of the CCMP programme that begins this August.

"Next year, we will have graduates from three specialisations. The market is always moving, and there will be demand for specialisation, and we will look into that," she told reporters after the ceremony.

Tengku Zarina said the response received from the SRI series programme was very encouraging, and this will further propel the country's capital market forward.

CCMP is SIDC’s flagship skill-building certification initiative, supported by the Capital Market Development Fund.

It is specially developed to meet the evolving demands and complexities in the capital market, but is designed to be applicable across industries, businesses and regions.

The development of the CCMP certification programme started in 2022, with the derivatives series in support of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) and Bursa Malaysia’s aspiration to grow the derivatives market, hence the need for more professionals in this speciality.

SIDC is the capacity-building arm of the SC. It was established in 1994 and incorporated in 2007.
