KOTA BARU: The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) is discussing whether to contest the Nenggiri by-election on Aug 17.

Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi said the party's central executive committee was discussing it.

He said the committee had not made a decision yet.

He said the party was considering the views of grassroots leaders, particularly at the state level.

"Many of Muda's leaders in Kelantan are highly capable, not only at the state executive committee level but also at the grassroots level.

"If Muda decides to participate in the by-election, we will field the best candidate," he said last night.

He said if Muda decided not to contest, it could still play a role as a political party, voicing voters' aspirations, demands or suggestions that could be taken up by contesting parties.

"For example, in the recent Kuala Kubu Baru by-election, although Muda did not contest, we issued suggestions and demands to be addressed in that by-election and (we) wanted to see contesting parties discussing those issues."

When asked if Muda would support a candidate or party in the by-election, he said the matter needed to be discussed at the central executive committee level and with the state executive committee.

"So I cannot say whether we will assist a candidate.

"There are many possibilities, whether we field a candidate, voice aspirations or assist a candidate, but it has not been decided yet."

The Election Commission fixed nomination for Aug 3 and early voting on Aug 13.

The by-election is being held after its representative, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, was sacked from Bersatu.

Under the Kelantan constitution, his sacking called for the seat to be vacated.
