PUTRAJAYA: The chief operating officer (COO) of a highway concessionaire has been detained for allegedly receiving more than RM300,000 in bribes.

According to a source, the suspect, in his 50s, was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at 8pm on Monday when he turned up at the MACC headquarters here to have his statement recorded.

“The suspect is believed to have received bribes exceeding RM300,000 from company owners for a highway project in the Klang Valley worth about RM6bil,” the source told Bernama.

The man will be remanded until Friday based on an order the MACC obtained from the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court.

MACC senior director of investigation Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrest.

In an unrelated case in Johor Baru, police received six reports related to fraud involving the supply of food to the state Fire and Rescue Department.

Johor police chief Comm M Kumar said the victims, who are all caterers, received calls from strangers offering tenders for events held by the department.

The victims paid RM24,900 but only realised it was a scam after checking with the department.
