THE National Water Services Commission (SPAN) said Air Selangor is bound by law to cut off the water supply if it feels that the water is unsafe for consumption.

According to the concessionaire, failure to do so was an offence under the Water Services Industry Act.

“As a regulatory body we had to ensure that Air Selangor cut off the water supply immediately after discovering water pollution at two rivers,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (July 24).

SPAN further noted that if water continued to be supplied by the treatment plants it would have endangered the health of consumers.

It said this in response to a consumer group’s call for stringent action against Air Selangor following the ongoing unscheduled water disruptions in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor due to water pollution at two rivers.

In a statement, the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (FOMCA) president Marimuthu Nadason slammed SPAN for not holding Air Selangor accountable, which he said led to their lack of caution and urgency.

Speaking to FMT, Marimuthu said the concessionaire must fine Air Selangor so that they will be more cautious, adding that even though water disruptions had been happening for the past 20 years, SPAN lacked serious contingency plans, especially for hospitals and schools.

To recap, odour pollution at Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah had led to the temporary shutdown of four water treatment plants, resulting in unscheduled water disruptions in hundreds of areas across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. - July 24, 2024
