KOTA KINABALU: Programmes and initiatives must be carried out to promote the architectural profession in Sabah, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

He said this is important to nurture young talent and provide a boost to the architectural community.

He urged the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Sabah chapter to focus on this, saying the profession’s future in the state is at stake.

“It is our responsibility to mentor and guide young aspiring architects, to provide them with the necessary resources and opportunities to flourish and excel,” he said at the PAM Sabah Awards Night held here on Saturday.

Gunsalam, who is the state Local Government and Housing Minister, expressed his commitment to supporting and promoting the architectural community in Sabah.

He said Sabah architects play a pivotal role with their thoughtful designs and creative solutions.

“Architecture is not merely about constructing buildings; it is about shaping our communities, preserving our heritage, and envisioning our future.

“With its rich cultural diversity and stunning natural beauty, Sabah deserves nothing short of outstanding architectural designs that complement its unique identity.

“The state’s growth and development must be balanced with preserving our heritage and protecting the environment,” Gunsalam said, adding that architects must play a role in striking this balance.
