KOTA KINABALU: The Sandakan branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has recorded 130 cases with a seizure value of RM2.74mil for the first eight months of this year to date.

The ministry's Sabah state director, Georgie Abas, said the statistics compiled until Thursday (Aug 15), showed 4,223 business premises had been inspected by the branch in the district.

In terms of compound, there were 66 cases under various offences, with the value of the compound amounting to RM39,300.

Two cases have also been brought to court and charged, with fines totalling RM24,000, added Georgie.

He said this in a statement released here after leading a visit and inspection on the supply of essential needs and controlled goods at a hypermarket, as well as a general market in Sandakan on Thursday (Aug 15).

During the ground inspection, a case was also opened under the Weights and Measures Act 1972 towards a business operator who was found using a spring scale whose accuracy could not be verified for trading purposes.

According to Georgie, during the period until Aug 15, 103 reports were received by their Sandakan branch office, where 87.37% or 90 cases have been investigated and solved, while 13 remaining complaints are still under investigation.

He said that 19 enforcement officers and eight price monitoring officers at the Sandakan branch are actively conducting daily inspections, especially at locations where consumers normally flock, in both urban and rural areas within the district.
