GEORGE TOWN: The Department of Environment (DoE) will investigate a viral photo showing a brownish strip in the waters off the Penang Floating Mosque in Tanjung Bungah here.
State DoE director Norazizi Adinan said they would also ask the state Fisheries Department and Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia to look into the matter.
"This is because the mud came from the boat and seems to be purposely done, openly in broad daylight.
"Yes, we will investigate the matter," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.
Meanwhile, state Fisheries Department director Zarina Zainuddin, when asked on the matter, said they had not received any information as yet.
Social media has been abuzz with the unexplained situation.
Netizens have speculated that it could be some sort of a chemical.
Others claimed that they also saw the same strip while swimming nearby the area.
