@nikicheong yes...as a long term.investor I feel the employees should be compensated well to reward them for exceptional performance. Every AA employee I know is very loyal to the company and I feel that is perhaps the most important thing in this country where wages are generally a disgrace and job hopping is widespread. Retaining talent and developing human capital is key in this modern era. But short term, ya, maybe hit the bottom line a bit hard lah. Oh well.

So what's the verdict on the results? Bit unfair to compare with Q1 2016 results because external environment was so different then. What matters is how AA managed those factors they could control. As for the exceptional gains, well, end of the day it all results in more profits to us the shareholders, yes? It may not be sustainable.but next few quarters the external landscape may be more favourable to actual operational profit. That's my amateur analysis anyway. Waiting for Icon to weigh in on this with his post mortem.

@nikicheong - according to SharkTank's friend at the AGM, it was mentioned that the AAC sale is progressing well but he can't say more beyond that because of Bursa regulations or something. We should take some comfort from that. At least its not cancelled and so we won't see a repeat of yesterday's massacre.

Steady chaps. AA always goes a little crazy before results are released. Although this time it's pretty extreme no thanks to lack of news on AAC and AAX 's poor performance and just pure panic on the part of many. Also the run up has been considerable the last few months. But what has really changed since last week? I'm stubbornly holding on.

I should have remembered that AA sell down around quarterly results time usually lasts a couple of days before it recovers.

I think the BBs not quite satisfied yet with the selldown so it will probably come down a bit more before they start buying in. Pity. I bought in again today on impulse at 3.31. Just a nibble though. Happy to hold and might just take another nibble if it falls further

Q1 results should be very good looking at the data but may not be enough to trigger a breakthrough. Pretty much all hinges on AAC in the short term. Anyway I'm long on AA so I guess I shouldn't worry too much about the day to day gyrations. Can't help but look though every day lol

@mancingbursa That Terra Firma sale, which took place recently, transacted for more than USD7.5 billion. AAC is what, maybe USD1 to 1.2 billion? I think in today's corporate world, a USD 1B deal is small potatoes.

I admit that I too - a big TF cheerleader most of the time, am also getting a bit antsy about the AAC sale. I could sell now for a handsome gain, but I believe the sale will go through simply because the airplane leasing business is red hot right now.

My one concern is that China capital controls may have thrown a wrench into the works and that's why the delay. Could be a Chinese company offered significantly more than the Korean bidder and now they are trying hard to lobby for Chinese government approval.

Hope we get more clarity on the issue at the upcoming AGM. Uncertainty sucks.

Well, even if the results are good there still always appears to be this kind of price movement just before and after results are announced - as long as I've been monitoring it anyway. Last year for example, results were superb every quarter yet save for Q116 there was this kind of price pressing activity. I think the big boys like to shake out the little guys before swooping in and snapping up their shares at bargain basement prices.

I guess quite a few of us small timers sold at 3.50 as it is an important psychological milestone. Me too I had a hard time restraining myself from selling. I'm still haunted by last year's painful drop from 3.30 and here we are now in unchartered territory. Exciting but a little bit nerve wracking too.

Yeah don't like earnings report announcement. AA stock always take a bit of a beating in spite of spectacular results because everyone has such high expectations. And the analysts will say öh but profits did not grow at the same rate it did last year or some bullcrap.

I'm a long term investor. Have held AA since 1.7x days and been accumulating ever since. Will continue to hold.

The deal will only be completed next quarter so unlikely they will announce special dividend anytime now - only when full sale proceeds are received, no? The most we can hope for is an announcement that the SSA has been signed, by whom, and for what price.

If they had started the formal sale process last yeareviewed around the time of the bandar malaysia deal, which knows? They may have got caught unawares too. Anyway...dodged a bullet there thank God. Let's all be grateful.

Good thing then that the lead bidder for AAC is Korean and not Chinese. Never mind If they're buying a smaller stake. We're fortunate of the timing of the AAC disposal - imagine if it was done earlier and hooked a Chinese buyer and then this whole capital controls thing happened before the deal is complete!

Dream stock. 2 billion profits, superb dividends, monetization of assets, yet more special dividends, fantastic growth story, dual listing and probably the best management team in Asian aviation (and one of the best in the Malaysian corporate world, period). Not to mention hot stewardesses in those saucy red uniforms. What's not to love? Think long term guys.
