Berlin, when it comes to the word “pledge”, it doesn’t just involve share ownership. Quite a few considerations come into play when it comes to a PLC and their bankers

Example : Solution Group. They own one property in Technology Park Malaysia. But they don’t actually “own” it. The asset is pledged to their bank. Solution cannot sell it as-is. They gotta do settlement first. If they want to “sell” and there is a “buyer”, then an arrangement have to be agreed on by all three parties. But it’s rare. A pledged asset rarely gets sold unless there’s a substantial infusement of funds

This is another example of “pledged” that is different, but also not that dissimilar, to shares

When you read announcements by PLCs about changes in substantial shareholder’s interest, don’t just look at the shares traded or the dates they were traded. Instead, read carefully who the nominees are for those trades; you may just look at “EPF” but look at who their nominee accounts are held under. It can be “Employees Providend Fund Board” or it can be “Employees Prvnt Fd Bd” and etc etc

JJ, they can do permutations as long as the ultimate/beneficial shareholder’s shares and capital value interest remain the same when the ultimate/beneficial shareholder never gave instructions to trade

Note that funds can have several margin accounts with several investment banks investing in and then trading the same stock they invested in. The key here is entry price for the stock when they do this. EPF is a prime example. EPF may be the ultimate shareholder of a stock using several margin accounts but they trade that particular stock based on those several margin accounts entry price and timing

KooSan, Rakuten is not an investment bank. Rakuten’s bank is Kenanga. I’ve got 3 accounts, one of which is not an investment bank and I leave it dormant. I recall one cannot subscribe to IPO if the account is under a stock broking house (instead of directly with an investment bank). Someone correct me if I’m wrong…

You’re right about having a trading limit that is 2x your cash balance BUT only if you do not have open positions. Sell your open positions and you get 1x the amount you sold

Margin account shares are held under the nominee’s account for the ultimate beneficial owner of the shares. Nominee CANNOT trade without the beneficial’s instructions
