Such an event has not only sharpened investors’ focus on how companies treat their migrant workers but also raised questions on the enforcement of the country’s labour laws.While not entirely new, conversations on environmental, social and governance (ESG) have been spreading especially in the wake of Covid-19 with companies all over the world asking if the pandemic was a risk they have overlooked.This in turn has made companies sit up to look into ESG considerations within their operations.

Indeed, the crowded dormitories have become a boon to the spread of Covid-19. The Teratai Covid-19 workplace cluster, which predominantly comprises workers from Top Glove’s dormitories in Klang as well as those from factories in other areas in Selangor, has so far recorded 5,094 cases as at last Thursday, out of 6,632 tested.

The country’s grappling with the Covid-19 outbreak among foreign workers, specifically at the world’s largest glovemaker Top Glove Corporation Bhd, has cast the spotlight on how businesses are addressing environmental, social and corporate governance issues that they face.Last Tuesday, the Ministry of Human Resources opened 19 investigation papers against six companies related to Top Glove for its failure to apply for an accommodation certificate from the authorities which led to the discovery of other offences, including dense, uncomfortable accommodation and lack of proper ventilation. The enforcement operations took place in five states.

Covid-19: RMCO remains in force in Terengganu, Pahang, Kedah, Perlis, Melaka and Sarawak until Dec 31 — Ismail Sabri

The country has recorded an additional 61,140 cases since the start of the third wave of Covid-19 infections on Sept 20, when there were 10,219 cases.This afternoon, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah will be extended for another 14 days from Dec 7 until Dec 20.In Selangor, three districts, namely Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor, will not be under the CMCO.Meanwhile, the CMCO in Perak, Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Labuan and Putrajaya will be lifted from midnight tomorrow.

Two fatalities were found in Sabah, while one each was detected in Johor and Selangor. The deceased — involving four men — were aged between 46 and 75 years with several health complications such as high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, and stroke.The number of active cases, which carry high transmission risks, dropped slightly to 10,775 from 10,799 reported yesterday.Currently, 130 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 54 needing ventilators.

As for the breakdown of 265 cases in the capital city, 228 were confirmed from Covid-19 clusters, including 162 from the newly-discovered Bina Bulatan construction site cluster, which involves Cheras, Lembah Pantai and Titiwangsa.

The Klang Valley — comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — made up the bulk of the new cases today with 490 infections. Of this total, Kuala Lumpur has 265 cases, Selangor has 221 cases, while Putrajaya only has four cases.

Sabah remains the worst-hit state, with 391 cases detected in the past 24 hours till noon today.

Malaysia today logged 1,123 new Covid-19 cases, taking cumulative confirmed infections in the country to 71,359, according to the Ministry of Health.Meanwhile, 1,143 Covid-19 recoveries were reported today. This brings the total recoveries so far to 60,204.

Malaysia today logged 1,141 new Covid-19 cases, raising the country's cumulative confirmed infections above the 70,000 mark to 70,236.Dr Noor Hisham said, the Klang Valley — comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — recorded the bulk of cases with 578 cases or 50.7% of the total new cases.Both Selangor and Sabah recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections, with 320 cases respectively. This was followed by Kuala Lumpur, which registered 256 cases

Most of the index patients of these new clusters have tested positive for Covid-19 through screening at the workplace, symptomatic screenings, and screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients, noted Dr Noor Hisham at a media briefing today.To date, 381 clusters have been reported. Meanwhile, 193 clusters have been declared ended including four clusters today, namely the Bandaran, Kolong and Ramai-ramai clusters in Sabah, and the Sentral cluster involving Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The Muda construction site cluster involving Titiwangsa, Lembah Pantai and Kepong in Kuala Lumpur (11 cases)
The Galeri construction site cluster spanning Lembah Pantai and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur (16 cases)
The Bukit Dalam cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur (13 cases)
The Cempaka cluster involving Kulai and Kluang in Johor (10 cases)
The Sungai Cincin cluster spanning Batang Padang in Perak, Segamat in Johor and Klang in Selangor (15 cases)
The Huma cluster involving Pasir Puteh and Kota Bharu in Kelantan (20 cases)
The Jalan Genting cluster involving Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur and Bentong in Pahang (14 cases)
The Atabara cluster involving Kuantan and Pekan in Pahang (five cases)

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham today announced eight new Covid-19 clusters with a total of 104 infections, while four clusters have been declared ended as no new cases recorded within 28 days.

The number of active cases, which carry high transmission risks, rose to 10,802 from 10,686 recorded on Wednesday. This means 116 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, with 46 needing ventilators to breathe.As of today, Malaysia reported a total of 69,095 Covid-19 cases and 376 deaths.

Sabah reported the second highest number of new Covid-19 infections today with 310 cases, followed by Johor with 78 cases, Negeri Sembilan (52), Penang (43), Kedah (32), Perak (26), Labuan (nine), Kelantan (nine), Pahang (four), Melaka (two), Sarawak (one), and Terengganu (one).

Among the new infections, only three were imported.Three out of the 11 fatalities were recorded in Selangor, two in Sabah, Johor (two), Negeri Sembilan (one), Kuala Lumpur (one), Putrajaya (one) and Kelantan (one). All of the deceased were aged between 50 and 81 years.The previous record high of daily death cases was 12 on Nov 3.

Of the 1,075 new confirmed infections, 508 cases, or 47.3%, were detected in the Klang Valley. Selangor topped the list with 459 cases, while Kuala Lumpur had 49 cases, according to the statement issued by the Health DG.

Dr Noor Hisham said 54 more cases in Selangor were confirmed from screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients, while the other was an imported case.

In Selangor, 307 new cases were detected from existing and new Covid-19 clusters. Meanwhile, 97 cases were detected from other screenings, such as screening at the workplace, screening after reporting symptoms, pre-surgery screening and among others.

Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases climbed above the 1,000-level again at 1,075 today from 851 reported yesterday, with 11 new deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The world’s largest rubber glove maker stressed that the efforts to source for more accommodation and to improve existing worker accommodations are still ongoing due to the large number of workers over there. Top Glove said it expects to complete the exercise of improving workers’ accommodation by the end of this month. Malaysia reported 851 new Covid-19 cases today, lifting the nationwide tally of infections to 68,020.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Human Resources (MoHR) said it had opened 19 investigation papers against six companies related to Top Glove Corp under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446) following enforcement operations in five States — Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Johor — amid the spread of Covid-19 infections in the Teratai Cluster.Top Glove said in a statement yesterday the company will be extending its fullest cooperation to the relevant authorities on the matter.
