admittedly my interest is more intellectual than spiritual.....I am interested in Pure Land Buddhism and Zen and learning bits and pieces of all schools / sects of Buddhism.

There is a world of difference between spiritualism and religious.....one follow socratic method.....endless exploring with curiosity, questioning and actively seeking truth........

.....the other one is about accepting the ideology......submission to the indoctrination.......being passive

.......although in the long run.....the impact on the outward journey in life could be a paradoxically 'aggressive' one though

There's no Chinese, Indian, European, Japan or other Buddhism. It's only a name but practice is the same. Mahayana or Theraveda Buddhism is basically the same but different levels of awareness (enlightenment).
