E-commerce growth has been very strong since five (5) years ago and with the current Covid19 pandemic, has accelerated the growth in the e-commerce with over 149% surge in online sales in Malaysia in the first few months of 2020, based on a research study by Commerce.Asia. More consumers have begun shopping online in greater number and frequency and forcing small and/or traditional businesses have gone or are going digital. Ecommerce also enables the businesses to reach out not only to the domestic market but also to the world-wide market. Furthermore, the internet economy in Southeast Asia is expected to grow to USD300 billion by 2025 – a prediction made by Google, Temasek and Bain & Co in a 2019 report. The companies are under pressure to keep up with building their e-commerce offerings to meet customers’ expectations and thus, requires making some type of change to their distribution strategy. To overcome the limitations in its existing infrastructure, many companies are opting to partner with a third-party logistics company to augment their inhouse resources and capabilities, enabling them to scale quickly and effectively to capitalise on e-commerce opportunities. The evolving demand of e-commerce and customers’ expectations especially in speed of delivery and predictability of delivery times are main contributing factors to the growth in the air cargo logistics industry particularly the freighter planes as many passenger airlines which previously many logistics companies have relied on their belly space for cargo are no longer in service and this has caused serious shortage of cargo space and delays in deliveries. Other than that, in view of the current pandemic whereby medical and biosecurity related logistics catering to products such as medicines, test kits, vaccines, PPE and etc as well as high value and electronics products are widely sought after which requires timely delivery. Furthermore, as air cargo industry is a highly regulated with high barriers to entry with only four (4) major air cargo operators in Malaysia at the moment, the supply is very scarce, but demand is on the rise. Therefore, the Proposed Acquisition will allow MMAG Group to expand its network and connectivity domestically and internationally. Premised on the above, the Board believes that it is timely for MMAG Group to enter this strategic investment to build up its infrastructure and competitive strength as well as riding on the wave of increasing demand in logistics services. Hence, it is expected to generate positive income to MMAG Group.
“Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a surge of demand in e-commerce but regrettably most passenger airplanes are currently not in service. This led to a serious shortage of courier space to cross-border destinations such as East Malaysia as the delivery services were previously substantially fulfilled by riding on the passenger belly space of the airlines and the waiting time for an available space may take up to 14 days currently.
"Hence, with the acquisition of M Jets, MMAG Group will be able to have its own planned schedule for timely delivery and reduce the need for the use of a third-party agent,” said MMAG executive director Kenny Khow.
The acquisition, said MMAG, will allow the group to expand its network and connectivity domestically and internationally to include both land and air logistics.
