China reports 161 new COVID-19 cases

BEIJING: China reported 161 confirmed coronavirus cases for Jan 2, down from 191 a day earlier, the country's health authority said on Monday (Jan 3).

Of the new infections, 101 were locally transmitted, according to a statement by the National Health Commission, down from 131 a day earlier.

A ‘tsunami’ of omicron variant COVID-19 cases are coming, WHO warns

The World Health Organization warned Wednesday that the world will soon see a “tsunami of cases” of COVID-19 which will stretch throughout the winter.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s director-general, said the highly transmissible omicron variant and the fast-spreading delta variant will lead to the surge of cases, per The Financial Times.

KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait has urged its citizens to leave several European countries including Britain, France and Germany because of a surge in cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

In a series of statements overnight Sunday, the oil-rich Gulf state also warned Kuwaitis, often big spenders abroad, to avoid travelling to the countries.

The foreign ministry said they should "delay their trips" generally and, in particular, to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

It said its citizens should leave those countries "considering the significant and unprecedented rise in the number of new cases" of Covid-19.

Europe has in the past few months again become the pandemic's epicentre and is battling an upsurge of cases spurred on by the highly transmissible Omicron strain.

The countries with the highest ratio of infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the world were all in Europe, according to an AFP tally on Saturday.

The count showed more than 4.9 million infections reported in Europe over the seven days to January 1.

France alone recorded more than one million new cases during that one-week period.

Kuwait's foreign ministry also said on Monday that the country's citizens should leave Morocco due to concerns over Covid-19.

The number of recorded cases in Kuwait remains relatively low.

But it jumped 20-fold in a month to reach around 600 cases on Sunday in the country of more than four million people.

Elsewhere in the Gulf, cases have also surged.

In the United Arab Emirates, infections have risen almost 40-fold since the beginning of December.

Saudi Arabia announced 1,746 new cases on Monday, the most in six months and a leap of more than 700 from just a day earlier.

The kingdom has reimposed social distancing measures at the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

India reports the highest number of daily Covid cases since early September

There were 37,379 new cases reported over a 24-hour period, government data showed Tuesday.

That was the highest reported figure since September and marked a sharp jump from the 6,358 cases reported a week earlier on Dec. 28.

Maharashtra and Delhi together account for around half of all cases in India attributed to the omicron variant.

U.S. reports over 1 million new daily Covid cases as omicron surges

The U.S. reported a record number of new Covid cases on Monday, with over 1 million new infections.

A total of 1,082,549 new coronavirus cases were reported Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, as the highly infectious omicron variant continues to spread throughout the country and beyond.

Covid Level in Singapore 'Unknown,' U.S. CDC Warns in Travel Notice

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday reclassified its Covid-19 travel advisory for Singapore, guiding Americans to avoid travel to the Southeast Asian nation because the level of the disease there is “unknown.”

What we know so far about IHU COVID-19 variant symptoms

Scientists and experts in France are keeping their eyes on the new IHU COVID-19 variant that has emerged in recent days.

The new variant — called the IHU variant because it was found by academics at the institute IHU Mediterranee Infection — has been linked to 12 cases near Marseilles, France, according to Business Insider.

Calling Omicron ‘mild’ a mistake, warns WHO
The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is killing people across the globe and should not be dismissed as mild, the World Health Organization (WHO) insisted Thursday.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the record numbers of people catching the new variant – which is rapidly out-competing the previously-dominant Delta variant in many countries – meant hospitals were being overwhelmed.

“While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild,” Tedros told a press conference.

“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people,” he explained.

“In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.”

Just under 9.5 million new Covid-19 cases were reported to WHO last week – a record, up 71% on the week before.

But even this was an underestimate, Tedros said, as it did not reflect the backlog of testing around the Christmas-New Year holidays, positive self-tests not registered, and overburdened surveillance systems missing cases.
