The North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) which has been gazetted as a free trade zone (FTZ) since Monday, signifies the federal government's commitment towards Penang's economic development.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said the gazettement of the NBCT as a free trade zone showed the federal government had never marginalised development in the state as alleged by various quarters.

"I have received numerous positive feedback following the recent announcement and I thank various quarters for their constructive suggestions.

"With the creation of the free trade zone, we hope that it will bring about multiplier impact in terms of economic development to Penang and contribute pragmatically to the Malaysian economy.

I am confident that MMC will report significant profit for its port business particularly PTP (transhipment hub). Many global port hubs are facing bottleneck in last quarter of 2020 due to surge in demand. And also coming to the first quarter of 2021 .
