Bangkok-KL HSR up on the board
● According to press reports, Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to study the
possibility of a high-speed rail (HSR) link between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Thai counterpart General Prayut Chano-cha
agreed that the relevant agencies will begin preliminary discussions on the
possible link, which will complement the proposed Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR.
Both leaders agreed on the need to set in motion the initial study.
High-level discussions will commence
● The reports said that discussions between the two countries will begin at the official
level before proceeding to the ministerial level. No timelines were revealed. Both
leaders have agreed to speed up infrastructure development projects to promote
connectivity in border areas, including the bridge construction between Golok and
Rantau Panjang and between Tak Bai and Pengkalan Kubor. The State Railway of
Thailand (SRT) will also begin preliminary talks with the Malaysian authorities.
Thailand has an existing HSR project
● Thailand already has a southbound high-speed train project in the works from
Bangkok to Hua Hin. Consideration will be made as to whether the Thailand HSR
should be extended or if a totally new line should be built from Bangkok. The Thai
Prime Minister prefers an extension from Prachuap Khiri Khan in Hua Hin to Padang
Besar in Sadao, before linking to Kuala Lumpur.
Keen interest from regional HSR experts
● Thailand’s Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport Peraphon
Thawornsupacharoen said China and Japan already expressed an interest in the
outcome of the feasibility study for the Bangkok-KL HSR project. He also did not
discount the possibility of the HSR extending to Laos and China in the future.
“Ballpark” cost of RM70bn
● This news confirms the earlier HSR alignment master plan revealed by The Land
Public Transport Commission (SPAD), which prioritises the southern HSR (KLSingapore)
but keeps the options open on the northern HSR. Out of the 1,400 km
Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur HSR rail line, 500km will be in Malaysia. Extrapolating the
RM50bn ballpark cost for the KL-Singapore HSR line, the 500km northern HSR
scope will cost RM70bn (our estimate).
Rail jobs are everywhere; maintain Overweight
● New large-scale rail ventures are good for the sector over the longer term. Gamuda
remains our top pick for a rail play. The HSR focus for Malaysia in 2017 will be the
KL-Singapore route. A bilateral agreement is set to be signed next month

Gamuda Q result shld be release mid of these month. Expect Gamuda to record lower EPS due to loss impairment receiveable in splash. In accord to Kps recent result, it have incur loss of -RM20m instead of gain from its 30% share associate splash stake. Therefore, based on proportion, Gamuda holding 40% stake in splash also may incur RM 27m loss.

However, Gamuda is much more bigger and diversified than Kps, its other property, highway and construction earning will still contribute positively to Gamuda.

if this is true, it should be a +ve news for Gamuda. at least can look forward for special dividend. But recent volatile seems to react very negatively to the outlook.

Upcoming Gamuda result will incur impairment loss in splash (alrdy shown in KPS recent q result) and today Market react disappointed with Gamuda unable to enter into FICI30.

I have sold back all gamuda-we yesterday at 1.18 to 1.19 to lock all profit first and free up capital and wait to re-enter back later after q result release.

Splash value at RM 2.7 billion still subject to independent valuer appointed from fed gov. Stare gov alrdy granted 6 month extension to conclude deal. Splash now is in the midst to clean up its book value, make necessary impairement on receiveable in order to reflect reliazabale value in prepared to be taken over by state.
