Singapore imports Electricity from Malaysia October 26, 2020 In an effort to expand the source of electricity supply, the Singapore government announced that under a two-year pilot scheme for electricity imports, the country will import 100 megawatts of electricity to the Peninsula as soon as the end of next year. It is also the first time Singapore has bought electricity from other countries.
During his speech at Singapore's International Energy Week this morning, Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing revealed the plan and said that importing green energy from other countries would help the country improve the resilience of its electricity supply, according to Singapore's Union Morning Post.
The Singapore Energy Market Authority subsequently issued a notice saying that the proposed 100 megawatts of electricity imported from Malaysia was equivalent to about 1.5 per cent of the country's peak electricity consumption. The bureau revealed that it plans to seek proposals for development programmes from operators by March next year. The announcement said that since the two countries already have electricity interconnections, electricity could be imported from Malaysia as soon as the end of next year, and that the pilot scheme was designed to improve the technical and regulatory framework associated with imported electricity and help Singapore promote larger electricity imports in the future. Singapore's government has announced that developing regional power grids will be one of the four major sources of electricity, in line with natural gas, solar and emerging low-carbon options
