正當大家開始使用4G手機之際，韓國三星電子週日宣佈率先研發出5G核心技術，下載高清電影只需1秒鐘。 全球迄今還沒有任何公司研發出在高于6GHz頻道傳送1Gbps數據的技術，因為超高頻的波長較短，傳送過程中損失較大，而且傳送距離較短。但三星利用64個天線單元的陣列傳輸技術，解決這個難題，在28GHz超高頻道以1Gbps以上速度傳送數據，最長傳送距離可達2公里。 跟4G LTE的75Mbps傳送速度相比，5G通訊技術要快幾百倍，上載和下載的速度可達到幾十Gbps，下載一部兩小時的高清電影只需1秒鐘。 目前歐美和中國政府仍在研發5G技術，三星率先取得突破，有利鞏固三星在5G技術的領導地位。三星計劃在2020年落實5G通訊商業化的目標。
