PKR’s Rafizi Ramli will seek help from Hong Kong’s graftbusters once again, this time over bribery allegations against Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail which purportedly led to Malaysia losing its claim on Pulau Batu Puteh to Singapore in 2007.

Despite admitting that it would not be easy to implicate Gani, Rafizi hoped that the action will garner a response from Putrajaya, including suspending the AG pending the investigation.

“They have the authority and power to investigate any financial transactions into Hong Kong if there is reasonable ground to believe that the money was a part of corruption,

“We need to compile to provide some information to Hong Kong authority which we will do within the next few days. (Then), I will wait for their response.”

Rafizi, known as PKR’s “expose man” and the executive director for National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre, has also set this Wednesday as the deadline to gather the information on Gani.

This will be Rafizi’s second report to the island’s Independent Commission Against Corruption, after the murky RM40 million “political donation” to Sabah Umno scandal back in November last year.

The move follows a revelation by former Kuala Lumpur Crime Investigation Department chief Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim in his 31-page statutory declaration sent to the Prime Minister’s Office on October 9.

In it, Mat Zain also defended his earlier allegation that Abdul Gani had intentionally lost the territorial dispute case, which was heard at the International Court of Justice in 2007. - Malay Mail

Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim has lodged a police report against Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah (pic), saying the Umno lawyer’s affidavit to the Court of Appeal contained inaccuracies, an offence under the law.

The former Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department director lodged the report at the Setapak police station this afternoon.

Shafee had filed the affidavit at the Court of Appeal last week in response to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's second application to disqualify the lawyer from representing Putrajaya as deputy public prosecutor in the government’s appeal against Anwar’s acquittal on the second sodomy charge.

Anwar's application will be heard in the Court of Appeal on December 19, Thursday.

In his police report, Mat Zain claimed Shafee had committed at least two offences under the Penal Code, the first for making false statements in the affidavit.

He alleged that Shafee had also suppressed material evidence with the intention of deceiving the court.

He said that Shafee had received from him a set of documents on September 24, 2013.

"These were documents Shafee had asked from me after meeting Tun Dr Mahathir Muhamad at his residence last August 10, the third day of Hari Raya," he said.

Shafee told reporters on Wednesday that he had filed an affidavit on what transpired in his legal firm and at the residence of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Shafee went on to say that Mat Zain had "slanted" what he had said in his October 7 statutory declaration (SD).

"My affidavit is supported by former (Commercial Crime Investigations Department director) Datuk Ramli Yusuff. I do not need to ask Matthias Chang to affirm it, and there is no need to trouble Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad)," Shafee said when asked to respond to the contents of the SD.

The SD by Mat Zain was prepared following a meeting in Dr Mahathir's house, attended by, among others, Dr Mahathir's former political secretary Matthias Chang, and Ramli, who had briefed the former premier over his run-ins with Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.

Shafee had vowed to expose in court a link between Mat Zain and Anwar as the former had filed a defamation suit against the former prime minister, but was not serious about the case, resulting in the court striking out the matter.

Mat Zain had then shot back at Shafee, claiming the contents in the affidavit was "a load of rubbish".

Anwar filed the application on December 6 using Mat Zain's SD as grounds to disqualify Shafee, saying Shafee's appointment to lead the prosecution team would deny him a fair trial.

The PKR de-facto leader said that Shafee knew of Gani's illegal actions in the Pulau Batu Puteh territorial dispute between Malaysia and Singapore.

Anwar said the SD also pointed to Gani and former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan's involvement in fabricating evidence in the "black eye" incident of 1998.

The alleged fabrication took place when Gani was said to have brought in pathologist Dr Abdul Rahman Yusoff to accuse Anwar in court of self-inflicted injuries, contradicting medical reports.

A Royal Commission of Inquiry ended with an admission by former police chief Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor that he had beaten Anwar hours after his arrest on September 20, 1998.

Anwar had in 2008 filed a police report against Gani and Musa, who was involved in the first sodomy case brought against Anwar.

A three-member committee, comprising retired judges, formed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), cleared the duo.

Shafee reportedly agreed during the meeting in Dr Mahathir's house that the MACC committee was illegal.

On November 21, the Federal Court dismissed Anwar's appeal, declaring that Gani could give a temporary licence to Shafee to lead the prosecution. Anwar then filed an application to dismiss Shafee on the grounds that the appointment was illegal.

Anwar, 66, was acquitted by the High Court on January 9 last year on a charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at a Desa Damansara condominium unit in Bukit Damansara in 2008. - December 15, 2013.

Abdul Wahid had said the toll rate should have been revised in 2011, as stated in the concession agreement. "However, the rate was maintained, but the government had to fork out RM400 million in compensation from taxpayers' money, which could have been used for other purposes."

What a Load of Crock! Back in 2011, all those who negotiated the revised highway rates then, didn't know that the RM400mil compensation could have been used for other purposes?

The minister had told... the press last week that the toll rate hike was unavoidable as it was an express condition in the concession agreement between the Government and highway concessionaires. Sounds suspiciously like its either the Govt has no money to fund 2014 budget more than the concessionaires got the Govt by the balls?

C'mon Putrajaya's "Economic Czar", its time to come clean. Tell us the real story why the need for the Govt to renegotiate and revise the revised 2011 highway concessionaires agreements now?

Isn't a fact that terminating the 2011 revised agreement is a breach of contract and requires the Govt to pay more compensation for not following through that agreement? That means the Govt has to compensate the concessionaires from 2011 to 2013 for the temporary freeze in toll hikes then.

Pada Pilihan Raya Umum ke-13 lalu, antara manifesto BN di bawah tajuk Pembangunan Infrastruktur Bertaraf Dunia dan Transformasi Luar Bandar ialah “kadar bayaran tol akan diturunkan secara berperingkat.”

Janji itu dilihat untuk menghadapi alternatif yang ditawarkan Pakatan iaitu untuk menghapuskan tol bermula dengan lebuh raya yang sudah mendapat pulangan modal. Ternyata BN tidak berani memberi komitmen tersebut kerana mereka lebih berminat menjaga kepentingan kroni di dalam syarikat-syarikat konsesi berbanding kebajikan rakyat.

Namun penurunan itu pun gagal direalisasikan. Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Abdul Wahid Omar mengesahkan bahawa kenaikan harga tol kini tidak dapat dielakkan pada 2014 atas alasan perjanjian konsesi. Namun, sebagaimana dibangkitkan oleh Ahli Parlimen Pandan dan Pengarah Strategi KEADILAN, kerajaan sama menerusi pelbagai syarikat berkaitan kerajaan dan agensi pelaburan amanah yang dikuasi kerajaan mempunyai kepentingan besar di dalam ketiga-tiga syarikat utama konsesi tol di Malaysia. Kesemua syarikat-syarikat ini mengaut keuntungan besar akibat perjanjian konsesi berat sebelah selama ini.

Sahlah bahawa rakyat akan dibebani dengan satu lagi kenaikan kos kehidupan, menjadikan 2014 sebagai Tahun Naik Harga Barang.

Lebih mendukacitakan lagi, Wahid menyatakan kepada rakyat yang tidak berpuas hati dengan kenaikan ini untuk menggunakan jalan alternatif.

Kenyataan beliau telah mengundang kritikan banyak pihak termasuk daripada Pemuda UMNO sendiri. Ketua Pemuda UMNO sendiri, Khairy Jamaluddin, duduk di dalam Kabinet dan membangkitkan bahawa beliau akan membawa isu ini ke mesyuarat Kabinet minggu ini.

Tetapi kita tidak mahu Khairy dan Pemuda UMNO bermain wayang semata-mata berkokok di luar seperti isu penyenaraian hitam ke dalam CCRIS peminjam-peminjam PTPTN dan menyerang TNB dalam isu kenaikan tarif elektrik sebelum ini, tetapi gagal menghentikan satu demi satu kenaikan kos kehidupan ini.

Sekiranya Kabinet yang dianggotai Khairy gagal membendung kenaikan kos kehidupan termasuk isu kenaikan tol ini, saya mencabar Khairy untuk meletak jawatan sebagai Menteri Belia dan Sukan. Lebih baik sahaja beliau memainkan peranan sebagai Ahli Parlimen biasa yang bebas menyuarakan kritikan di luar.

Umno's craving to accumulate wealth drives it to play up the Syiah issue to retain federal power at all cost, says MP Ariff Sabri

PETALING JAYA: In the wake of toll and electricity tariff hikes, a DAP MP today called Umno the biggest rent seeker in Malaysia.

Raub MP Ariff Sabri, via a post in his blog Sakmongkol AK47, also said that Umno has lost its marbles due to its incessant lust for power.

“For Umno, power opens the doorway for its members to gain unlimited wealth. Therefore, power must be retained at all cost.

“And its leaders derive wealth by controlling concessions in the highway operating companies, independent power producers, sugar monopoly and others. This makes the party the biggest rent collector in Malaysia.

“Those who do not know the meaning of the word rent-seeker, just look at Umno,” said Ariff.

Touching on the witch hunt against Shiites, the DAP leader said that it was nothing more than Umno’s way to divert people’s attention from pressing matters affecting the country, such as corruption and the soaring cost of living.

Elaborating on that point, Ariff said that Umno’s political survival depends on two things, which are to maintain federal power and keep Malays subservient to the party.

“That is why the government fears a people’s uprising. In order to keep the people in check, Umno creates diversions so that we will not focus on the real issues affecting the rakyat,” he said.

Ariff added that Shiisme was never a problem in Malaysia as most Muslims in the country adhere to the teachings of the Syafie denomination, which comes under Sunnah wal-Jamaah.

“The only group that is making a big issue out of this matter is Umno, by accusing its opponents of being a Syiah,” he said.

Ariff urged Malaysians, especially the Malays to rise against Umno before it is too late.

“Right now, Umno is busy trying to weed out its opponents such as PAS using the Syiah issue and it has nothing to do with defending Islam,” he said.

that's why I say that those Malays who bodek & support UMNO will eventually be the losers while the real thinking Malays [not UMNO supporters] will be able to think reasonable & logically & it is these Malays who will survive & fend for themselves when bad times come & they are the REAL WINNERS.

It's just been announced that the toll for 15 highways in the peninsula will be increased by between 50 sen and RM2 on Jan 1.

Works Minister, Fadillah Yusof the rates have not been adjusted for the last six years. And that...

"The government's contracts with the concessionaires allow for adjustment every three years. If the government does not allow the concessionaires to adjust the toll rates, it has to pay them compensation amounting to RM400 million" ...

What kind of deal did our government make with these companies? If the highway is so lucrative why did the government privatise it? No money to build I think was one reason. With such a win-all-the-way deal any bank will gladly loan a government the money. Right? Cannot lose one ma. So why did our government privatise it?

Can some genius economist please help poor slobs like me to understand ah? Otherwise, life here is getting quite unbearable la.
