WhatsApp says it has fixed a security flaw that could allow hackers to use manipulated messages on the messenger's desktop client to gain access to all files stored on a computer.

The vulnerability has been patched in desktop version of WhatsApp, a program that allows users to send messages on their PC, laptop or MacBook.

This means anyone who uses the downloaded version of WhatsApp on the computer - Windows or macOS - should immediately update both the program and the app on their phone.

The vulnerability appears to be limited to WhatsApp Desktop prior to version 0.3.9309 and when the program is connected to WhatsApp on an iPhone prior to version 2.20.10, as the WhatsApp bosses at Facebook say in a security update.

The latest version of the desktop program can be downloaded and installed from the Messenger website.

WhatsApp can also be used on computers without installing any software by navigating to web.whatsapp.com in your browser. To load your messages you simply have to scan a QR code with your phone.

Due to some browser limitations, not every WhatsApp function may be available.
