Qualcomm has unveiled a reference extended reality headset, a device designed to demonstrate the power of the company's XR2 platform.

To demonstrate the functionalities of the Snapdragon XR2 platform that was announced late last year, Qualcomm on Feb 25 revealed an extended reality (XR) reference headset, a device that can properly utilise the chip's performance and execute its features.

When the chipset was introduced in December, the company touted it as the "world's first 5G-supported extended reality platform" which has features spanning across augmented, virtual, and mixed reality.

The headset can support up to seven cameras: two internal cameras that track eye movement, four external cameras that track head movement and support the creation of depth maps, and one final one that could either be a second monochrome camera or facial and lip-tracking camera.

It's been optimised to function on a low latency 5G connection via on-device processing that delivers "a new level of immersion and never-seen-before experiences", while additionally supporting 3D audio and voice control.

As of Feb 26, the reference design previews a device that will be available commercially over the next few months before it hits the public consumer market.
