Since the publications of my scholarships offer, a few days ago, my wife is receiving about 10 applications every day. I must say some of them are deserving cases and some are so ridiculous. But here are a few examples for your amusement.

Application for financial aid to pursue bachelors
I am ???, a Diploma in pharmacy graduate. The reason I am writing an email to you is to seek for financial aid to pursue my bachelors. The degree that I am looking into is not a Pharmacy degree but TESOL. I have always been very passionate about teaching English. I took up pharmacy due to parents interest and along the way of me completing my diploma, they have realized that my passion for English language is at its peak. No doubt, I have graduated with 3.0 CGPA in diploma in pharmacy only to full fill my parents desire and I am more than blessed that all my hard work has paid off when they have gave me the ultimatum to choose my pathway. I am 23 years old this year but that has not degrade my motivation to continue studying. The diploma in pharmacy that i have studied will not go to waste because I have gained a vast knowledge on the pharmaceutical world. I have actively participated in English Language activities during school and university days. I was the school`s and the university`s parliamentary English debater. I was a volunteer English teacher under the NGO known as EWRF. I was teaching students from year 1 to year 3 of SJKT Sg. Pari Ipoh,Perak. My father is an ex policeman,66 years old, served the government for almost 38 years and with the expenses these days which are at an alarming rate makes it difficult for him to manage the household expenses. Thus,he wont be able to take care of my expenditures. My humble request is for you to consider my application. It would be a great help if you could help me create an opportunity to brighten up my future and to make my dream a reality. I am reachable via my mobile ?????? anytime. Thank you in advance.
Best Regards,
?????
My comment: After completing a Pharmacy Diploma, she expects to get my scholarship to qualify as an English teacher!

Poor Applicant studying in UK
Greetings Madam,
My name is Miss ???, and I am from Malaysia currently pursuing my degree in Bachelor of Laws in University of Liverpool, UK. I came across the news about the Koon Yew Yin scholarship recently. I am writing to request if I would stand an opportunity to get a scholarship under the Koon Yew Yin scholarship. I am committed to pursuing a career as a professional lawyer and, I have making progress toward earning a degree in the field with a good grade point average.
The value of education is something that I have understood since a very young age. Neither of my parents had an opportunity to attend a proper school or college, and faced many struggles in their personal and professional lives because of this. They came up in life solely based on their experiences. They have both had to work multiple jobs to reach where they are now to a stable position in life. However, they made a commitment in their life to give their children the best education, to do everything within their power to instil in us a fondness in learning and an understanding of the importance of hard work and dedication in life. Because of their love and sacrifice over the years, I have been able to devote the time and energy necessary to academic achievement even though money has always been tight.
As you know, university education is quite expensive, but it is an investment that is certainly worthwhile. My parents used their EPF money and I applied for a partial loan from Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (KOJADI) as an incoming third year freshman, which helped me paying for my educational expense; partial tuition fees and accommodation rent. However, as to the current drop in our Malaysian currency, my parents are facing some difficulties in paying one more final payment. We are now short of one more payment which is approximately RM 30,000 which the due date for the payment will be 2nd of March 2016. If we can even receive a small sum of scholarship we would really appreciate it.
Ever since I have arrived to UK, I have applied for a few part time jobs so that I can take care of my daily expense which will lessen the burden for my parents, unfortunately it is not as easy it seems, as I have to wait for vacancies.
I am also the first one in the entire family to study abroad to pursue a higher education, thus I hold a great burden to perform well, prove to myself and to make my parents proud and to pay off for all the sacrifices they have made for me. Besides that, my father’s bring back income is smaller than my mother’s and that she has to support and contribute greatly. We are three of us siblings in the family, as my parents have to contribute for my sibling’s future education as well.
I know for a fact that this Koon Yew Yin scholarship is for the locals however I would greatly appreciate your consideration. Please know that the scholarship will make a positive impact on my ability to continue with my university life smoothly and will be greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
My comment: Why would any student go to study in UK if he is poor?
A poor medical student needs my scholarship
I was one of the second year medical student who wished to apply for Koon Yew Yin scholarship but after reading your husband’s post in investor.com just now, my heart was broken. I am not a top student in my batch with average CGPA 2.42 but I try my best to be one of them. I am not a straight A in SPM but i got 8As in total of 10 subjects and with 3.75 CGPA in my foundation in Aimst University.
My father is a carpenter with salary RM1500 per month and my mother is an office girl with basic salary RM 1200 but they work hard in order to provide sufficient money for me to take MBBS in Aimst University. Yes, I borrow RM150000 from PTPTN and my parents have to spend average about RM3000 per month on me. I am sure you are wondering how a family with income about RM2700 can provide RM3000 for their son to take medical education in private university, cause my brother works in Singapore with a basic salary about SD1800 and provides about RM2000 per month for me in order to pursue OUR DREAM. I have one elder brother and sister, they are working. We hope one of us can come out with name doctor to make our parents proud and I am the only hope because my father is an illiteracy and he works as carpenter when he was 10 years old until today (53 years old).
Regarding the pay back role of PTPTN, I have to pay back RM750 per month for 20 years. Yes, it is 240 months with low interest (1% from total loan in 20 years), but not monthly RM2000 for about 20 years. There is a minimal requirements set by the government (MQA and specific agent) for every university in Malaysia to enroll students and I have a few of friends retake their foundation in order to enter the degree course in Aimst. Aimst will never lower the minimal requirement, mark up the marks or makes the exam become low standard to complete the quota. Aimst have increased the minimal requirements for foundation student to continue degree course in here from recent years.
Yes, Mr Koon Yew Yin is a hero for me, he started offering scholarship to assist needy poor student for the past ten years to help the one who indeed of help. Yes, the life of doctor is not easy but tough. If I can pursue my dream and make my parents proud of US, it is worth than anything.
My comment: Why would any poor student want to study medicine knowing the tuition fee alone cost between Rm 250,000 to one million Ringgit?

I see now wrong in Mr koon publishing the letters to accentuate the deplorable state of English in our graduates. Even iron lady rafidah has said that tun Razak would turn in his grave at the state of our command of the global currency of communications
Not only their mastery of the language but also their fragile nature. Joey Yap calls the current generation as the strawberry generation. Nice on the outside but a light squeeze not only turns them soft, even the juice gets oozed out.
In my broker's office, there is a nationally sponsored graduate who returned with a degree from the US. Employed as a assistant manager, and he was asked to xerox a few copies of some documents for a meeting with the GM. However, he took an exceptionally long time and when asked why, this was his reply and I'm not joking - I wanted to compare and make sure that the photocopied documents are the same as the original. He's considered an endangered species and left alone in his own space to make the numbers quota

Dear Mrs Koon,
You are very generous and kind in contributing back to the society.
Hope I'm also able to do that in future.
Currently, I'm doing my PhD in USM and successfully obtain a scholarship to finance for my studies.
Besides your scholarship, I hope to learn more about investing from you, Mr Tan, Mr Ooi or Icon8888.
All of you are my idols.

"My comment: Why would any poor student want to study medicine knowing the tuition fee alone cost between Rm 250,000 to one million Ringgit?"
Mr Koon, this comment is quite unfair. Why can't a poor student aim for an expensive course of study? Are you inferring that poor individuals should only stick to cheap courses?
I am a regular reader of your articles and do admire you for your successes in life and your willingness to share that success with others - however I do not agree with your decision to publicly publish (and borderline ridicule) emails that were likely penned with heartfelt hope.

I read n reread what KYY posted.
When you're poor and asking for help, you're already fighting a battle already so you don't need someone to poke fun at you in this manner. If the point was to SPREAD A MESSAGE, it could have been done with a bit of tact, something i would expect from an elder statesmen like kyy. But what message was being spread? That english in msia is bad? bad english in msia is something we already know exist, so it's nothing new. Was it to show that young people shouldn't make 'unreasonable' and foolish choices? None of that. These specially selected "Famous 5" were chosen, the way a school BULLY chooses a VICTIM. It was an insensitive act, a touch of black comedy meanness, perhaps. Although in KYY's defence, it is not nearly as bad as beating them up and stealing their lunch money. (And since KYY gives away so much $$ to charity, i forgive him for this one mean act. i'm cheap that way).
Anyway, as Malaysians, we must all learn to live in piss.

I had just read above news that similar to KYY case that the poor and the young had to be respected. They are human being. If you want to donate, please donate a good one. Do not bring rubbish to entertain them. If you want to donate, do not criticise them in public and making them as a spot light in public.
2016-01-16 11:40
Mr Koon, you do have my utmost respect in your noble deed to contribute back to the society in need especially to those who wants to better himself or herself through the field of education.
To those that are successful, I like to congratulate and to wish you all the best and to make full use of the opportunities being given to you. You are most fortunate and lucky to have this type of opportunities as compared to my time, if one wants to succeed and to have a degree, one has to work real hard for it. No such scholarship is available at that time.
I recalled I have to finance my studies by working 2 or 3 part-time jobs in the university and studied full time with a full load of 4 or 5 classes. Life was really tough but I was happy and found life meaningful with the thoughts of self achievement and planned a better life for the future. Please do not let it slip and go to waste and do try to help others when you are able and capable.
On the other hand, for those who are not successful, please do not be discouraged, disheartened and disorientated by what Mr Koon has written. Please sit back and give a deeper thought on what Mr Koon has written and seek the rationale for his writings and comments. His comments deserved some deeper thoughts and analysis. Take it positively and constructively. Just be tough and seek other alternatives to continue your journey and be successful in your undertakings. There is always a solution if one is willing to work for it. All the best.
2016-01-16 19:08
Those not successful will not be devastated, unless uncle Koon spit on them, which he did
2016-01-16 19:12
Mr & Mrs Koon have their points and views on letters written by the applicants.
Instead of sharing their letters in public/blog (although their personal detail is masked, they may be demoralised by public comments/views), suggest to reply them individually with your wise advice. Although they may not get your scholarship, they are blessed by your moral support and encouragement as they believed you are a person of Wisdom.
God Blessed you and family with wisdom and good health.
2016-01-17 06:27
Smartinv, I do fully agreed with your suggestion.
Do please write to them and advise them as well, Mr & Mrs Koon.

White men are the only race in this world who are proud of their own language:English! Because they don't feel that their own language is inadequate that they need to learn the language of others. We seldom see any white men speak the language of other races with their family in the public(of this I feel ashamed if compare with them)unlike certain yellow skin Asians who speak English with their children in the public and even name western names for their children as kind of glory. They like to fawn the west, they hope immigrate to the west on the ground that the moon they see in the west is rounder than the moon of their own country. They wish to mix with the west, although the white deny to accept them because of different skin color. Korean and Japanese are another. We seldom see any Japanese or Korean name English names for their children or speak English with their children in the public as an extraordinary. These people firmly keep they dignity, never kowtow to others deserved respectful. Japanese professors or doctors who do not know English are not a big deal, for non ones ridicule at them, while in other Asian countries, even the late Confucius is ridiculed by street sweepers for not knowing English.
2016-01-17 11:11
Looking at most of the comments, most of them do not understand the message that Mr Koon is trying to emphasize. One is just to show the bad standard of English even though the students score As. We need to work on this rather than trying to ignore this key point. Another point is the word " poor and needy " must be understood very clearly. There are many more poor and needy compared to those few cases mentioned . Do you know how many are studying locally on government loans and working part time to survive ?>
2016-01-17 18:59
And they took very serious on the letter to figure out the messages behind it
2016-01-17 20:46
And there is rewards if it was solved
May be a map lead to a hidden treasure
2016-01-17 20:48
I did not laugh at the letters and I am not a saint.Everyone has aspirations, hopes and dreams and looking at their letters, they have the qualities to make it in life.
2016-01-19 14:30
Certain yellow skin Asians regard English as word of ghost. Other than their own people, the tribes never before saw any other different races, and once their saw a white man, with deeper eye socket and extremely hooked nose, they were terrified, they regarded him as a ghost, and call him Gui Lau(a guy of ghost), and his speech was described as words of ghost. Not only that, asides of them self, they described all other races as ghost, thus a series of ghosts emerged: white ghost or black ghost etc...
In Asian, you speak English accepts honorable. Thus, either beggar or villain, as long as they come from the west, well speaking English, are deserved respectful when they come to Asian countries.
Most of the Asian countries had their own language as national language, and English is not a compulsory for university entry. However, due to the less round of the Asian moon, certain private universities and institutes stick to the 'requirement.' Thus under such circumstance, you have no other choice unless try to learn speak and write ghost's word, or you never can expect to look for a better job. What you can blame is you were birthed to a wrong country, where the color of its people are not as white as milk.
2016-01-20 05:33
KYY ( and I) certainly do not have your kinds of convoluted thinking.
Being practical is the only criteria for me. ...that is why both my children have English tuition from pre kindergarten to Standard 6 and both went to Chinese schools because the rise of China is already clear enough by the late 1990s.

Soon enough this foundation will become the most seeking scholarship because government has no money left to sponsor JPA for future student
2016-01-20 22:00
Koon will be flood with letter from JPA qualified and high quality student who speak england better than most UTAR standard
2016-01-20 22:02
Government couldn't afford to sponsor 700 JPA student per year because all of them wanna study medicine and it is very expensive in the other country
2016-01-20 22:04
Too bad Koon only can afford 10 letter by now because all of them wanna study medicine if 700 of them wanna do it, Koon will be broke in one year

Putrajaya has suspended the Public Service Department (JPA) Scholarships for degree courses and the Education Ministry's bursary for pre-university programmes amid falling national revenue.
According to Sin Chew Daily, this was confirmed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Wee Ka Siong who raised the issue at the cabinet meeting today following several complaints from high-achieving students.
Wee said he had asked the Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to rethink and reinstate the scholarship.
"The prime minister understands that the economy is not good at the moment and the people are facing heavy burden so he has instructed the chief secretary to the government and JPA to come up with a new solution.
"I can't say for certain if there will be a change of decision but we (MCA) have tried our best to appeal the matter because we don't know how the economic situation will develop," Wee was quoted as saying by the Chinese language daily.
The suspension applies to both overseas and local scholarships and affects some 700 placements this year.
Urgent resolution
Wee urged for an urgent resolution to the matter as some university commence their intake as early as Feb 1.
He added that Najib had asked the chief secretary and JPA to submit a report to the cabinet next week with their proposal.
The Sin Chew report also pointed out that some students have questioned why the JPA scholarships were suspended, but not Mara scholarships.
However, Wee declined to respond to this claims, citing that he had not heard them personally.
Asked if the suspension of the JPA scholarships was linked to the planned budget revision on Jan 28, Wee said he did not know.
A check with JPA's website found the "bursary e-filing system" link which is used by students to apply for the scholarships, have also been removed.
Putrajaya is struggling with shrinking revenue as the Brent crude oil price has fallen to a 12-year low, settling at US$27.78 per barrel.
This is in contrast to a high of US$114.81 per barrel in 2014.
Najib has announced that the 2016 budget will be revised to adust for falling revenue and will see government expenditures optimised.

This old man is one leg in the coffin already but yet want to humiliate those young people.
Never look down on young poor people, you will never know where they can go with all the time & potential they have.
While half dead old man like Koon is not much time left, max is 10 years if he can live until 93, making fun at young people is maybe one of their fun thing to do in life.

Mr Koon, may I suggest you should just sponsor those who are really poor and could write reasonably good English.
2016-02-07 19:51
don't put to much emphasis on language ability, students may not aimed to be "language word-smiths", they could be future scientists and engineers, excel in logics and mathematics, and have creative minds
2016-02-12 17:14
English is important, but that's not the only important thing to consider.some people are just over the top on emphasizing its importance.
