Market power, the holy grail of investors
Market power is the holy grail of investors. Warren Bufett calls it moat.
Investors love it. It is the Gold standard for investors. Market power assures investors many things including growth, profitability, increasing dividends and capital appreciation.
But, there is a dark side to market power .
Market power destroys competition, produces monopolies and duopolies. Increasing inequalities in societies. Statistics show that two thirds of Americans do not have $ 500 iin their bank accounts at any one time.
In America, every thing leads eventually to monopolies and duopolies. Competitions are killed off or bought up. Remaining is called market power, the holy grail of investors.
America has spend the last 40 years in pursuit of market power by its companies. In the mean time, it has produced a society where two thirds of its people do not have $ 500 in their bank accounts. One of the most unequal country in the world.
As a society, as a country we cannot allow ourselves to fall into the same trap as Americans. The country, the government has a duty, a responsibility to promote competition, so that there is more competition in the market place. Competition benefits consumers, benefits customers, raises wages and salaries and stops the ever rising inequality gap.
Market power alone cannot be the answer to all our prayers as citizens, as investors, as government. Left unchecked, the rich become richer, the poor poorer, the gap between the rich and poor grows ever wider. If this continues indefinitely, some day a critical mass is reached and every thing explodes and gets destroyed.
As a people, as citizens, as government as investors we need to find a way to promote competition, to stop anti competition behavior, to promote plurality, to help the younger companies grow, to stop tendencies towards monopolies and duopolies.
The PH government is drafting a New Economic Policy. I am supportive of this effort and hope the NEP will incorporate the necessary policies and laws to promote competition., to reduce income and wealth gaps, to promote plurality and choices., to take care of the growing but smaller companies.
So you see, while market power is the holy grail of investors led by Warren Bufett. It does not really solve the country's needs. We need to find a way to promote and to invest in smaller growing companies. To promote competition.
moat? what moat? We also need competition, fairness, equality, prosperity for all, stability, and steps to protect competitions.
Warren the Bufalo is not all good. There are dark sides to the Bufalo.

China model........The world is very impressed with the China model. A strong government with Confucian values. A strong Imperial government also ok.
A strong government with the right Confucian / socialist values can do miracles .
The American model is found wanting in many critical aspects.
