PETALING JAYA: Britain’s The Guardian says the downfall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government last week, which saw the return of Umno under a new coalition led by Muhyiddin Yassin, was due to a “royal coup”.
“A king has overturned a democratic election result that challenged a corrupt old order. This is wrong and the world ought to call it out,” the daily said in an editorial.
It said it was unfortunate that Umno, which is among the parties backing Muhyiddin’s bloc in a new coalition called Perikatan Nasional, would return to office “thanks to a royal coup enabled by hubris and infighting”.
The paper said the circumstances leading to the collapse of the 21-month-old government showed that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad “had badly miscalculated in believing only he could hold the government together and would thereby be reappointed by the king”.
“In the event, the monarch passed over Dr Mahathir and decided to appoint the newly independent Mr Muhyiddin as prime minister, citing his ability to command a parliamentary majority,” it added.
Mahathir’s resignation on Feb 24 was followed by his party’s exit from PH, leaving a power vacuum in Putrajaya. A scramble soon ensued among various political blocs for the numbers needed to convince the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that they have the majority support to form the next government.
On Saturday, the Agong exercised his constitutional powers by naming Muhyiddin as the eighth prime minister, after the PPBM president broke ranks with Mahathir.
The Guardian meanwhile warned that Najib Razak could “pull the strings” despite facing corruption charges, adding that “his aim will be to get off the hook”.
The paper said Muhyiddin should prove his claim of getting the majority support of MPs, but disagreed with calls to dissolve Parliament to make way for fresh polls.
“This would be a mistake, creating a vacuum for nationalist or religious demagogues to fill,” it added.

TM never had the intention to pass the baton to Anwar and he used Azmin to deter Anwar to push for the PM post. This caused further tussle between Azmin and Anwar.

____________
He had denied this theory. He did not do this. Deep state did - as well as other phantom menace and attack of the clones
2020-03-04 16:40
Mahathir never wanted to handover to Anwar! Most probably will give to Anwar few months before GE15! So yeah, pointless to deny this!
As for collapse of Pakatan government! Please, we all know the true story! It was Mahathir and Asmin! Don't blame others! Strange that Mahathir refuse to accept the blame and Asmin name completely keep under water by Mahathir! So you know that Asmin will remain deep state in Mohiden government! So don't expect things to go well!
2020-03-04 18:05
Haha,
Muhyiddin will kick out Mahathir son and appoint Azmin as his hitman.
Azmin will bury UMNO by puting all the UMNO OKTs to jail and get UMNO other MPs to cross over to Bersatu. By GE15 UMNO is gone and Bersatu is the New UMNO.
2020-03-04 19:24
SsLee! I believe you! This Asmin definately Mahathir lacky! Just like Nazri Aziz send out to destroy Umno from within!
2020-03-04 19:32
Mahathir does not have the slightest intention to handover to Anwar and he is sick of working with DAP. But since he already promised and the whole world already know, thus he execute this plot to get away clean. So clear also cannot see.
2020-03-04 19:38
Yeah, then blame Anwar and Mohiden! Gosh, we all know all fingers point to Mahathir and Asmin! I mean, the infamous Sheraton move is so obvious!
2020-03-04 19:40
Yes
besides GST akan mari
also a special i3 tax
all forumers to pay RM1.00 per word or part thereof
2020-03-04 20:00
Dickme! Yeah, Pakatan made impossible promises! Removing GST was as stupid as one can be! Malaysia oil is goner! Government of the day need money, and the only short term long term damage is borrowing money!
Eventually any one who form government will realise, Malaysia doesn't have the money, GST is a must!
Unless you want Malaysia to turn into backwater nation, then go ahead! during Pakatan short 2 years, there was nothing done! Basically, talk 3 talk 4 over achievements that were not! Even Pan Borneo was halt! RTS was halt! HSR was halt! MRT3 was almost halt! The only thing moving is Mahathir 3rd national car!
But like you said, it's blessing in disguise! Pakatan was not learning from the past and they certainly hasn't learn anything until now! They still use Mahathir as their icon! I mean, what happen to Anwar!
2020-03-04 20:02
No worry previously PH got Save Malaysia Fund and this round PN will have another Save Malaysia Fund. Ku Nan is worth a billion he will donate half billion to this fund for love of this nation
2020-03-04 20:07
You failed to get the gist of comment.
BETRAYAL from within and in cohoot with enemies from outside was the main reason for PH's failure to execute reform.
You write a lot but most of it are emotional crap. Use your gray matter while it functions properly otherwise you will be like the madman on the streets with tattered cloths on, yelling, shouting and mumbling incoherent gibberish.
2020-03-04 20:09
Yeah, what a shock to know Ku Nan has a billion! Najib has billion worth of jewelry! Zahid has billion of worth of 'funds'! Haix, Umno full of billionaires but give no f for rakyat!
2020-03-04 20:10
all of you crack your heads so much
when answer is very simple
the most popular product is men asking to be caned at kinky joints
thats masochists aka masochism
people who enjoy suffering
same as cabinet or party members
Mahathir resigned coz he enjoy suffering, a masochist
party members sabotage each other coz they enjoy suffering, all masochists.
now no salary co car no driver, why? answer is they enjoy it....
2020-03-04 20:14
There was no 'royal coup'! Agong made decision after consulting party leaders! 1st round, ask all MPs, no clear majority! 2nd round ask party leaders, Mohiden came on top! So there!
Actually, Mahathir has zero support! Bersatu abandon him! Pakatan initially support Anwar! But i guess, Pakatan loves being a lapdog!
2020-03-04 20:17
same as Assman
now no car no driver no salary no money no office no position
no one will ever trust him again
why did he do it?
bet you he is enjoying himself
=> masochists
2020-03-04 20:20
Dickme! Speaking of dogs, Umno warlords were so fond of keeping them! I mean, Khairy with his pet, Papagomo! Zahid with his sidekick Jamal Yunos! Najib with that brain dead Lobakman! What the heck is Umno and their dogs!
2020-03-04 20:23
Wait, Mahathir too loves dog! Just look at his loyal pet, Khairuddin!
2020-03-04 20:24
Only Asmin keep a female dog! But at least his dog was once a minister!
2020-03-04 20:26
at least this happen, we can see clearly their true colours every point of view. Mahathir made well and very dirty game plan. Besides, the affect for cleaning the rubbish. Next game, will be on parliament day soon.
2020-03-05 09:32
Datuk Seri Rick Walker
Well, actually, it was Asmin who toppled Pakatan in the first place! Funny Mahathir conveniently shift the blame to Anwar, and Mohiden! In fact Mahathir could still form minority government if he had not resign the next day! So yeah, it was Asmin and Mahathir!
