PAGOH: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the people are tired of politics at a time when they are suffering the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said people are angry because at a time when they have lost their jobs or source of income, all they hear about are political issues.
"That is why I avoid making statements or talking about politics at this time. People are just tired of it all.
"What is the point of politicking if it does not help the people," said Muhyiddin.
He said he agrees with the call by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for all quarters to stop politicking at this time.
"One of my main priorities at this moment is to ensure that Malaysia is safe from the Covid-19 pandemic as well as to ensure the economic recovery of the country.
"I want to make sure that Malaysia remains peaceful, safe and not disturbed by foreign elements," said Muhyiddin in his speech at a gathering with Pagoh community leaders at the Pagoh Sports Complex, here.
Also present was Bukit Kepong assemblyman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.
The prime minister also said that it would be difficult to hold the upcoming Batu Sapi by-election and the Sarawak state election during the pandemic.
"I have had discussions with the Election Commission (EC) chairman (Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh) about having certain restrictions on campaigning, maybe to do so online.
"He also voiced his concerns that the commission may have difficulties appointing election workers as people are afraid of the virus," said Muhyiddin.
He said the Sarawak state election would also see the movement of people from Peninsular Malaysia to the state.
"People would want to go back to vote, including those from the red zones, so who can guarantee that the virus can be contained," said Muhyiddin.
The Batu Sapi by-election has been set for Dec 5 while the Sarawak election has to be held before August next year.
