DATUK Seri Ahmad Maslan’s name is synonymous with the controversies and memes that have adorned Malaysian political and social media life since the implementation of the much-despised Goods and Services Tax (GST) on April 1, 2015.

His nomination as the new Finance Deputy Minister has sparked new controversies on social media networks and renewed attacks on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has received widespread support from supporters since announcing the deputy ministers’ lineup.

Some argue that Ahmad Maslan’s reappointment to the post he held under the fallen and imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is a farce.

The controversy surrounding his appointment has sparked outrage among Malaysians on social media, with users reminding Anwar that Maslan was a key figure in the GST implementation.

After the 2018 elections, analysts and observers said the GST contributed to the defeat of Najib’s government by the Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Maslan became the face of the GST for Najib’s regime but he was rejected by the masses while cartoonists and netizens turned him into anti-GST memes.

He advised netizens on how to save money by cooking in UITM hostels and making his “famous” nasi goreng on the cheap.

Najib too was trolled online with songs on Kang Kong or water spinach which the former prime minister said was cheaper with GST.

Twitter users seem pitiless and are bashing both Anwar and Ahmad Maslan for the appointment.

Twitter user izzi berhohoho @IzzraifHarz says, “seronok la geng kementerian kewangan boleh merasa nasi goreng shef ahmad maslan nanti skdjskjdks.”

Some users attacked Anwar too, saying he might probably like the ‘nasi goreng‘ Ahmad Maslan would prepare for him. Netizens are also imagining the potential pot-luck sessions the ministers might have among each other.

Maborock @Maborock1, in response to the nomination of Ahmad Maslan to the deputy minister’s post says, “Antara yg bijak (wong chen, ong kian king) dgn yg bingung ( a.maslan), dia pilih yg…Boyal. Bodo tapi loyal

“Tahniah kpd YB (yg bingung) a.maslan. Semakin hari, semakin dekat jadi PM. Mula dari tpm”.

The user is saying Anwar had many choices like PH members, Wong Chen, from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Dr Ong Kian Ming from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), but he chooses Maslan, calling the latter Boyal, a combination of ‘bodoh’ (stupid) and loyal.

Otherwise, the user is also sending congratulations to Ahmad, suggesting that the latter is closer to becoming PM which starts with the nomination as PM.

김애비 @fizabalqiss says, “Tak tahu nak gelak ke nak nangis ke atau nak bebel. Speechless pun ada”. “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry or scream. I am Speechless.”

Netizens are also commenting on the fact that Ahmad Maslan may not be entirely that smart in tackling the media, but he has one good quality that not many do not have. It is called loyalty. Such inappropriate remarks made towards the new Finance Deputy Minister were through the roof.

Some netizens @menantu_mak_awk are showing support, saying, “kenapa org suka hati ckp dia bodoh eih…sbb clip bingung dia tu jeke…cuba check wiki dia beb…”

“Why do people like to call him stupid…because of the clips (Ahmad Maslan’s nasi goreng video),…try checking his wiki, babe,” says the comment.

Others are saying the father of GST is back. Will the GST be back with him? - Dec 10, 2022
