KANOWIT, March 25 — An allocation of RM1.5 billion from the Rascom Development Agency (Rasda) for developments in Kanowit and Selangau has been approved by the Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

He said the main objective of Rasda is to upgrade community infrastructure in the two areas.

“The allocation has been approved by our Premier to improve the infrastructure in the districts of Kanowit and Selangau. This project will also focus on socioeconomics through sustainable agriculture to increase the productivity of the community here,” he said.

Aaron said this when speaking at the Kanowit-level Rabies Prevention and Control Awareness Campaign 2023 at the Kanowit District Office Hall here today.

He said that while it was still early for the project, several labs have been held to explain on the Rasda project.

Meanwhile, commenting on the rabies awareness campaign, Aaron said such a campaign is good to give exposure to the community here to be careful with regards to the disease.

“It has been reported that there have been five deaths due to rabies during 2022-2023 in Kanowit alone. This is of great concern as if it is not contained, it may result in many more deaths.

“Because cases like this are increasing, the Sibu Hospital in cooperation with the Kanowit district office is holding this awareness campaign to deal with this problem rather than prolong it,” he said.

A total of 538 participants comprising Penghulus, Pemanchas, Tuai Rumahs and community leaders participated in the campaign.

Aaron urged the participants to spread this awareness to their communities and tell them to carry out their responsibilities by now allowing their pet dogs to roam outside their homes and ensure they are vaccinated.

“For everyone’s information, starting in 2022, the Kanowit Hospital has also set up a Dog Bite Clinic to facilitate the administration of anti-rabies vaccine for the population,” he said.

Also present were Kanowit district officer Jackline August, Sibu Division health officer Dr Teh Jo Hun and Sibu health officer Dr Aren Senideh. — Borneo Post
