THE propaganda machines of the PAS-Perikatan Nasional (PN) are working hard to show that without Malay support, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will face a tough fight in Selangor. Meanwhile in Kelantan, PKR is pushing its agenda towards the youth, saying they can make a difference if they dump PAS in the upcoming state polls. As the state polls approach, analysts predict that Pakatan Harapan (PH) will need to work hard to maintain its hold on Selangor due to the current direction of the Malay vote. Selangor has been under PH’s control since 2008, but analysts expect a tough battle between PH, its new ally Barisan Nasional (BN) and the federal opposition front PN. Ilham Centre think tank CEO Hisommudin Bakar stated that PH and BN have not yet finalised any political cooperation for the upcoming elections, with both sides hoping for a transfer of vote banks, reported Malaysia Now.

Selangor has long been considered a PH stronghold, but the upcoming state polls will be the first time PH faces an election in Selangor without an established Malay partner, according to the portal. Some analysts believe that PH still has a good chance of winning in Selangor despite the lack of a strong Malay partner while UMNO, a major party in BN, might not be allocated many seats. Others are of the view that PN could win more seats in the state assembly, but it would be challenging to topple PH in Selangor due to its influence in mixed constituencies. Nevertheless, the Kelantan PKR secretary of the state leadership council Zinda Khalil Sastro Hassan is of the opinion that change can happen if the unity government has a specific strategy to capture Kelantan in the state elections (PRN) in July. While PAS is making immense efforts to capture Selangor, PKR is showing that it can also disrupt the waters for the Islamic party in its stronghold. Whether they succeed or not will depend on how the youngsters vote. Zinda said that young people, who make up almost half of the voters, now have a more openly political view compared to previous generations, and they have the potential to vote for PH. “If we strengthen the programme for young people, the impact is there. I, in collaboration with the Kelantan Youth Council, ABIM Kelantan organise a programme for young people. “We see that parents don’t go into (explanation) very much, let them know anything. But young people can change. I tried to meet them and they see another (openness),” Suara Keadilan reported him as saying. Therefore, Zinda hopes that more dialogue programmes with young people can be made in collaboration with central government agencies. He further added that one of the things that can help young people is speeding up the launch of the People’s Income Initiative programme in Kelantan. He felt that PAS was a bit upset with the developments at the federal level when the people’s acceptance was more positive towards the administration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. - March 25, 2023
