KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub today said that the ministry's enforcement team has faced death threats from certain parties while monitoring a cartel's cooking oil smuggling activities in the country.
Malay daily Sinar Harian reported Salahuddin as saying that such threats will not stop authorities from continuing to crackdown on smuggling activities.
“Is there leakage in (cooking oil supply) or malpractice? Yes, I don't want to be a hypocrite minister.
“So we face it. How to face it, that's our skill (expertise), our method, because these are industry players.
“You can't simply bulldoze, they are suppliers,” he said during a townhall programme that took place at the Karangkraf Group Complex yesterday.
Meanwhile, Salahuddin said that the country's monthly requirement for packaged cooking oil is 60,000 tonnes.
He said the enforcement officers, with the assistance of the ministry, will exert their full authority to regulate and ensure an adequate supply of oil in the market.
