KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Land Bhd (BLand) has appointed Abang Abdillah Izzarim Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari as an independent non-executive director, effective August 10.

Abang Abdillah, 45, is the son of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg, more popularly known as Abang Johari or Abang Jo.

"Known for his hands-on approach, (Abang Abdillah) Izzarim actively engages in day-to-day operations, leading and guiding his team to ensure alignment with client expectations and fruitful business partnerships," BLand said in a stock exchange filing.

BLand said Abang Abdillah's entrepreneurial journey commenced with Aerotrain Charter, a company specialising in aviation cargo operations.

"However, his lifelong passion for technology, digital animation, software development, and PC gaming inspired him to establish a successful animation and PC game development business," it said.

According to the filing, Abang Abdillah started his career as a commercial pilot before moving into the world of technology and business.

He took on the role of executive chairman at Sarawak Consolidated Industries Bhd in June and currently holds the position of chairman at Sarawak-based telecommunications company Irix Sdn Bhd (formerly known as PP Telecommunication Sdn Bhd).

Abang Abdillah also serves as a director at Cempaka Helicopter Corporation Sdn Bhd.

BLand has been in the headlines this week.

The company, along with Berjaya Corp Bhd founder and adviser Tan Sri Vincent Tan, is pursuing legal action against Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for allegedly defamatory remarks against the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.

Tan and BLand are suing for general, compensatory, aggravated, and exemplary damages.

The RM700 million SMG project involves the rehabilitation of the Klang River.
