KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia welcomes the idea of cooperating with Indonesia on a peacekeeping mission to Palestine, if given the mandate by the United Nations.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was discussed with Indonesian president-elect Prabowo Subianto during a three-minute phone conversation today.

"We exchanged views on current issues, including Prabowo's role in representing Indonesia on the international stage lately and his efforts in promoting regional and global vision, collaboration and peace.

"I also welcomed the idea of cooperation in a Malaysia-Indonesia international peacekeeping mission and the possibility of expanding this collaboration to the Asean regional level.

"Touching on the humanitarian situation in Palestine, I informed (Prabowo) of Malaysia's willingness to cooperate with Indonesia in any peacekeeping mission, should we be given the mandate by the UN," he said in a Facebook posting.

Anwar said he also expressed his gratitude for the success of Prabowo's recent high-risk surgery on his left leg and prayed for his speedy recovery.

"At the end of our conversation, I expressed hope that the upcoming elections in Indonesian which will culminate in the election of district heads, on Nov 27, will proceed smoothly and be successful.

"May all preparations for the inauguration of Prabowo as president on Oct 20 also go smoothly," he said.
