In response to the rejection of a motion by Raub MP Chow Yu Hui to debate the police violence at Jalan Parlimen by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul on the implausible reason,

Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) condemns the shamful decision by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul to reject a motion by Raub MP Chow Yu Hui to debate the police violence at Jalan Parlimen.

TBH-ADA has presented concrete evidence showing that on July 15, the police used violence against Teoh Lee Lan, Wong Voon How and Liau Pin Chun and destroyed their personal belongings.

As a senior PKR leader who originated from the reformasi movement, Johari not only allowed the police to use violence against peaceful protesters under his nose, but also rejected the motion to debate the issue relating to people’s substantive rights.

This runs counter to the concept of justice that his party has long advocated.

We thank Raub MP Chow Yu Hui for bringing up this motion, but we also lament that only Bakri MP Tan Hong Pin showed up to support the parliamentary motion.

Why couldn't the DAP and PKR MPs who used to throw their support to the Teoh family at Plaza Masalam, and hold Teoh Beng Hock memorial services across the country, express their support for the motion? This would have put enormous pressure on the speaker to pass the motion to debate the issue.

TBH-ADA calls on the government led by Pakatan Harapan to stop abandoning its promise of human rights reforms.

It is high time to accelerate the reform of the police force, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and the regulations for civil society groups to petition in Parliament.

Please walk the talk to realise a civilised and tolerant Malaysia.

Ng Yap Hwa is chairperson, Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement.
