Waves up to 5.8 metres expected in some coastal areas during extreme weather

KUALA LUMPUR: The extreme weather conditions experienced in some northern states, especially in Langkawi and Pulau Pangkor, in Kedah and Perak, will likely persist till Saturday.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a weather update, said heavy rain, thunderstorm, strong winds and choppy seas are expected in the coastal areas.

The peak of the weather condition is anticipated to be on Friday morning with strong winds drawing up waves as high as 5.8 metres high in certain parts of the coastal areas.

"Strong winds and continuous rain is expected in Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak until tomorrow, before the weather starts to improve.

"The concentration of wind that occurs in the north of the Peninsula and west of Sabah is expected to continue until Saturday.

"This situation has the potential to produce thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds for a longer period in the area as well as strong winds and rough seas in the waters of the South China Sea and North Malacca Strait," MetMalaysia said in an announcement on its website.

METMalaysia has also issued a Persistent Rain Warning for Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak which is effective until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a weather update video spotted on social media indicated that a few Asian countries in the region, including Phillipines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, particularly the northern states are experiencing the effects of three tropical storms, Bebinca, Invest 98w Gener (98W) and Pulasan (Helen)

It said states and islands namely Langkawi, Kedah, Perak, Perlis and Penang will be subjected to extreme weather conditions as a result of the these three tropical storms which are currently traveling fast.

About 12 hours ago, it was reported that Bebinca is traveling at 30km/h, 98W at 35km/h and Helen is at the speed of 110km/hr.
