International demand for US financial assets cooled in December as optimism Europe would resolve its debt crisis reduced the appeal of Treasuries as a safe haven. Net buying of long-term equities, notes and bonds totaled US$17.9bn during the month, compared with net purchases of US$61.3bn the previous month. Including short-term securities such as stock swaps, foreigners
bought a net US$87.1bn in December, compared with net buying of US$42.9bn the previous month. (Bloomberg)
