Now why is Palm Oil So very IMPORTANT?

Answer:

PALM OIL HAS 44% OF PALMIC ACID CONTENT (THE HIGHEST AMONG ALL VEGE OIL)

The oil palm produces two distinct vegetal oils in its fruits: crude (red) palm oil, the fresh oil obtained from the mesocarp, and kernel oil, the oil obtained from the kernel seed of the palm fruit. These oils are used and marketed separately according to their own supply and demand conditions [6]. The oil productivity of the oil palm is ten-fold higher than that of the soybean, with a yield reaching 7.5 to 9 tons of oil/year/ha for the best Cirad commercial varieties in favorable agro-climatic conditions (www.palmelit.com). Palm oil constitutes the highest annual world production of vegetal oil, at 53.3 Mt, followed by soybean oil (43.4 Mt) and rapeseed oil (23.5 Mt) (http://www.fas.usda.gov/oilseeds/Current/). The wild species E. oleifera is not exploited at a commercial level due to its low yield [7].

The consumption of vegetal oils falls into two major applications: the food industry (with over 80% of the market) and the chemical industry [8]. Furthermore, in the 1980s, with the start of the full exploration of vegetable oils for biodiesel, principally due to interest in renewable energy sources, oil crops such as oil palm, soya, and oilseed rape began to be used as primary sources for these fuels, and higher proportions of unsaturated fatty acids are better for this purpose [9], .

Palm oil contains approximately 50% saturated fatty acids, with 44% palmitic acid (C16:0), 5% stearic acid (C18:0), and trace amounts of myristic acid (C14:0). The unsaturated fatty acids are approximately 40% oleic acid (C18:1) and 10% polyunsaturated linoleic acid (C18:2) and linolenic acid (C18:3) [11]–[13].

Palmitic acid (16:0, PA) is the most common saturated fatty acid found in the human body and can be provided in the diet or synthesized endogenously from other fatty acids, carbohydrates and amino acids. PA represents 20–30% of total fatty acids (FA) in membrane phospholipids (PL), and adipose triacylglycerols (TAG) (Carta et al., 2015). On average, a 70-kg man is made up of 3.5 Kg of PA. As the name suggests, PA is a major component of palm oil (44% of total fats), but significant amounts of PA can also be found in meat and dairy products (50–60% of total fats), as well as cocoa butter (26%) and olive oil (8–20%). Furthermore, PA is present in breast milk with 20–30% of total fats (Innis, 2016). The average intake of PA is around 20–30 g/d representing about 8–10 en% (Sette et al., 2011). PA tissue content seems to be controlled around a well-defined concentration, since changes in its intake do not influence significantly its tissue concentration

US CBP has seized US$2.5m worth of Malaysian palm oil shipments since February

KUALA LUMPUR (March 9): The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has seized four shipments of Malaysian palm oil in Baltimore since Feb 11 due to information indicating that the commodity was manufactured by forced labour.

In a statement on its website on Tuesday (March 8), the US CBP said the palm oil shipments are valued at nearly US$2.5 million (RM10.5 million).

The US CBP said it had seized the latest shipment, consisting of 108 super packs of palmitic acid, on March 1 and confiscated three earlier shipments of a combined 270 super packs of palmitic acid on Feb 11.
