Does Pahamin still have an interest in AA? If not, I fail to see what this news has to do with AA, much less be the reason for its price rise this morning.

Hmmm...interesting:
"Stock bashing
This scheme is usually orchestrated by savvy online message board posters (a.k.a. "Bashers") who make up false and/or misleading information about the target company in an attempt to get shares for a cheaper price. This activity, in most cases, is conducted by posting libelous posts on multiple public forums. The perpetrators sometimes work directly for unscrupulous Investor Relations firms who have convertible notes that convert for more shares the lower the bid or ask price is; thus the lower these Bashers can drive a stock price down by trying to convince shareholders they have bought a worthless security, the more shares the Investor Relations firm receives as compensation. Immediately after the stock conversion is complete and shares are issued to the Investor Relations firm, consultant, attorney or similar party, the basher/s then become friends of the company and move quickly to ensure they profit on a classic Pump & Dump scheme to liquidate their ill-gotten shares."
Does anyone come to mind?

NYSE would definitely value AA higher than these local IBs with unscrupulous motives. At least there they value innovation and leadership as well as brand power and marketing prowess - something no other Malaysian company can come close to emulating.

Maybe now Tony and AA will finally be able to crack the China market.

graynoize...I understand your frustration and why you sold. I too am a long time holder of AA. I too was disappointed with the SD and I too got a rude shock from the latest results. That said, Tony for me has delivered maybe not all of what was promised, but certainly a good amount of it. 12 cent dividend on several occasions + 40 cent + significant capital appreciation = a stellar ROI since I first bought in a few years ago. I'm gonna stay invested a while longer and see how it pans out. Even if he delivers on just half of what he says, that will be good enough for me.

Why does Citi forecast earnings for competitor airlines to rise 11% while they see AA's dropping 13%?? Why the big difference? Is AA so inefficient that they are expected to lose sales while their competitors are doing well?
Citibank have lost all credibility. Just wanna spook retail players into panic selling their shares so they can scoop them up on the cheap. These pricks should be investigated for share manipulation.

Shrobin - really interesting that you mentioned that JP Morgan's holdings in AA actually increased during the period they were talking shit about it. Bloody cheating banker wankers.
2019-01-30 15:39 | Report Abuse
shrobin I agree with you. I remember the JP Morgan incident as well in 2016. No real rhyme or reason - just like this citi analyst. They say they expect AA earnings to decline by 13% vs 11% earnings growth by competitors. Like huh? Why? How did they arrive at this? AA consistently leads the industry especially during challenging periods. Number of passengers carried are breaching new highs. Citi provides no basis for its analysis. But a lot of nervous retail players play right into it and start dumping their shares. Those of us who have been AA investors long enough can recognize this old game played by these unscrupulous IBs.

yeah meantime you provide no valid counter-point or analysis of your own to support your own view. Insults and harassment don't count. So what credibility do you have?

ShareholderOppression: Agreed. Intelligent diversification for any large corporation to source new and compatible income streams should be welcomed, yes? As long as it doesn't distract management from focusing on the core business - like AA India and Japan for example which as you rightly pointed out, needs to be kept an eye on.
Especially India. That's turning into a total f**king circus.

factorrumour you are right. Even Tony himself has said that the reason analysts cannot fully appreciate AA's value is they don't understand it. I invested in AA a long time ago because I believed they were the best low cost AIRLINE out there with high brand recognition globally. Just didn't make sense to me that a world renowned airline like AA would be trading at less than USD 1. Now I don't really understand all this new digitalization, e-commerce stuff either but as long as the airline business continues to grow and this other stuff doesn't eat into its revenue thats fine by me. I believe Tony is trying to grow ancillary business income through these other ventures so AA will no longer be at the mercy of oil prices like we are now. That in turn will allow AA to grab market share and be even more competitive while other airlines are choking on high fuel prices.
Sounds like a good plan to me.

Fears of a financial crisis may be overblown. The problems we see now with global stock markets, particularly the US, are more policy related rather than structural, i.e. more because of trade war and interest rate hikes as opposed to deeply embedded instability in the financial system as was the case with the global financial crisis. Otherwise the US economy is booming. The markets are reacting exactly how they are supposed to react with respect to interest rate hikes which are supposed to be cooling measures anyway. "Correction" is probably the more accurate term.

The fact that Thai AA made a profit last year while Nok Air made a loss gives me some comfort. It shows that high fuel price notwithstanding, AA's rivals in Thailand can't compete with them.

@ivy88 I could be wrong but I think AA hedges on a half-yearly basis. For 1H2018, they rather carelessly hedged only 18% of their jet fuel requirements. I hope they learned their lesson and hedged most of it for 2H 2018.

I was once present in a meeting where the developer practically forced the engineer to consider smaller columns than recommended in a hillside housing project. Whether the engineer finally gave in I don't know but I remember the developer being very insistent so as to shave a few dollars per sq ft of the cost.

Thats why its good that AA is buying all those new planes. And I'm pretty sure there are strict international standards which impose a wide margin of safety on just how frequently an airline can have a plane in the air. I bet all airlines and not just AA push their planes to that limit. And I'm sure, beyond that limit, the margin of safety is very wide.
Air disasters happen despite all these safety measures, but what else can you do if you have already observed all the safety standards?
By that same token - what about developers/construction companies cutting costs by using substandard materials, construction techniques? Should we be worried about investing in them? Maybe we should be even more worried about living in / working in their buildings?

Sigh, AA has to deal with so much bullshit in India. When the plane's Captain tells you to get off the plane, you get off! Every other passenger anywhere else in the world will listen to the pilot's instructions but not in India apparently!
Looks to me like a set-up. AA's enemies in India are doing whatever they can to make life difficult.

Maybe most are staying on the sidelines to see what is the outcome of the OPEC meeting later today. Saudi and Russia want to increase production, Iran doesn't. Also, one good thing coming from this trade war nonsense is if China slaps tariffs on US oil, that US oil will have to find a new buyer to the tune of 300,000 barrels a day. Hopefully all this will depress oil prices so AA can start to creep up again.

"Some of the charges reflect the allegations made by the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), representing local carriers IndiGo, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir, which opposed AirAsia India’s entry into the Indian market.
Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy has been a prominent detractor of AirAsia’s India venture. He calls it an “illegal” airline and praises the Indian investigative agencies for doing “good work” in the case."
I rest my case.
