The evolution and spread of a pandemic is not completely random. All pandemics, COVID-19 included, follow a standard life cycle that consists of set phases. Starting with the initial outbreak, pandemics can be tracked through their acceleration phase, inflection point, deacceleration phase and ultimate ending. These phases can vary by pandemic and by country, as government and policy changes heavily influence how the disease evolves, yet they can provide a basis for an estimation of how the pandemic will progress.

As of 30 April 2020, the model predicted a 100% end to the pandemic on the worldwide scale of around 4 December. This differs for specific countries, with Singapore predicted to be 100% free of the virus around 28 June, the UK to be 100% free around 27 August and the USA to be 100% free around 20 September.

China's COVID-19 vaccine trial, the first such vaccine to reach phase 1 clinical trial, has been found to be safe, well-tolerated, and able to generate an immune response against SARS-COV-2 in humans, according to a study published online on Friday by medical journal The Lancet.

China has approved three COVID-19 vaccine candidates for clinical trials, with the recombinant adenovirus vector-based vaccine (Ad5-nCoV) listed as the world's first vaccine to go into phase two by the World Health Organization. This type of vaccine is able to act as a natural infection and is especially good at teaching the immune system how to fight the virus.

CHICAGO (May 22): The United States plans a massive testing effort involving more than 100,000 volunteers and a half dozen or so of the most promising vaccine candidates in an effort to deliver a safe and effective one by the end of 2020, scientists leading the program told Reuters.

Thailand on Saturday, started Covid-19 vaccine trials on monkeys, after positive results were seen in mice.

National Vaccine Institute director, Nakorn Premsri said if the trials show promising results, the vaccine would be tested on humans by end of this year or early next year.

For more risk-averse investors, it may be tempting to jump into a Novavax position if it reports positive results from its phase 1 clinical trials in July. Keep in mind that Novavax's prior vaccine candidates failed in phases 2 and 3, not in phase 1, and that vaccines are less likely to fail early than other pharmaceutical products.
