Nextnation mulls going into data business
Nextnation Communication Bhd is looking into the possibility of venturing into the data centre business in Malaysia via the acquisition of one of South-East Asia’s largest data centre players.
The company, a smallish mobile applications and platform provider, currently leases data centre facilities from external parties to host its critical servers and computer systems which it uses to carry out its operations.
However, sources say the company is now in talks to potentially buy over the Malaysian operations of a group which is involved in the development and maintenance of more than 200 data centres both here and overseas.
The group is said to be listed on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM.
Nextnation will also soon build its own 30,000 sq ft date centre in Cyberjaya. In 2012, it purchased 5.9 acres freehold enterprise land for RM18.5mil cash.
By having its own data centres and facilities, Nextnation will be able to save on the cost of leasing external facilities as well as generate an income by itself renting out additional space to other companies in need of such services, says one source familiar with the company’s plans.
Eventually, the company’s business volume should also increase in line with the potential upgrade of facility capacity.
“There are a couple of parties vying for this group’s business and Nextnation is one of them. Talks are ongoing,” the source says.
Nextnation, however, declined comment.
According to an industry report by UK-based consulting firm BroadGroup, the South-East Asian markets of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia will see sustained investment in data centres with a forecast 40% increase in capacity by 2015.
“The key story is one of continued growth across all markets driven by factors ranging from mobile data to enterprise IT outsourcing, the emergence of cloud and market entry by large-scale data centre players,” the report reveals.
Nextnation in 2012 said the Cyberjaya land it bought was to cater to the development of office space and facilities such as a data centre, research and development labs and an incubation campus for in-house usage and will be partly sold and/or tenanted out to third parties.
The gross development value of the project is expected to be between RM400mil and RM500mil.
Meanwhile, interest in this counter has been building up if its share price uptrend and increase in trading volume this week are anything to go by.
The stock is up 22% this week against the broader market which ended higher by 0.16%.
Proposed bonus issue
Apart from talks on venturing into the data centre business, sources say a return of interest in the company could also be stemming from a proposed bonus issue which could be announced as early as next week.
The bonus issue will likely be on the basis of two bonus shares for every five existing shares held by shareholders.
“This is basically to reward shareholders who had earlier subscribed to its rights issue (completed last month) which raised some RM40mil, ” the source says.
TuaHuat, definitely yes bcos of free. But if NN share price hit my TP, i will take it up partially only. Anyhow, i will buy back again after bonus issue due to good company prospect.

Reference is made to the article entitled “Nextnation mulls going into data business” appearing on page 2 of the StarBizWeek on Saturday, 15 February 2014. In particular, the sentences reproduced below:- (i) “…acquisition of one of South-East Asia’s largest data centre players”; and
(ii) “…proposed bonus issue which could be announced as early as next week.”
The Board of Directors of NCB (“the Board”) wishes to clarify the statements made above.
In respect of (i) above, NCB and its subsidiaries (“NCB Group” or “Group”) are continuously seeking to explore and initiate viable business opportunities which will benefit and create value for the Group. One option being considered is the venturing of the Group into the data centre business.
The NCB Group wishes to confirm that it is currently engaged in preliminary discussions with a data centre company to potentially acquire its business. To date, no definitive or conclusive terms have been agreed upon with any party, and in particular, NCB has not committed itself to any acquisition of a data centre company.
In respect of (ii) above, the Board is not the source of the statement in the said article and NCB is not aware of how the writer of the said article obtained the information.
Nevertheless, pursuant to the article, the management and Board are now discussing various options including exploring and evaluating the possibility of a bonus issue. However, the detailed terms of any such bonus issue has not been finalized to-date.
Accordingly, should there be any concrete proposals to be undertaken by NCB, the Board will make the relevant announcements in a timely manner in accordance with the ACE Market Listing Requirements of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad.
Hi Choo, absolutely yes if NN really propose bonus issue.
BTW, pertaining to the calculation of bonus shares price and existing mother shares held by you after ex-date is:
If the co. gives X:Y bonus where X is the no of Bonus shares Y is the shares held by you.
Ex-bonus price is A x Y/(Y+X), A = last closing price before ex-date
Assume NN propose 2:5 Bonus issue and last closing price before ex-date is 20 cents. So ex-bonus price is 20 cents x (5/7) = 14.28 cents, then round up is 14 cents.
